Day #25: Akko x Diana (Little Witch Academia)

First off, happy Yuri Day everyone! Apparently that’s a thing, and I’m pretty stoked about it! Also, Happy Birthday Akko! We all hope it’s a MAGICAL day. And there’s no way it’s a coincidence that her birthday lands on the same day as Yuri Day. It means she was destined to be with Diana.

I love these two so, so much (another top five quality ship right here). They are the perfect example of how two opposites can radiate such extreme chemistry, despite all odds. And even though they seem like polar opposites, they have some very important similarities that bring them together. They are both extremely dedicated to magic and worked extraordinarily hard to get where they are today. On the other hand, they also create an ideal balance between strict and responsible and carefree and reckless. Akko’s passion and resilience inspired Diana, and she was finally able to see how special Akko really is. The last few episodes where Diana and Akko actually have positive interactions and begin to form a deeper bond were my absolute favorites and what 100% pushed me on the shipping band wagon and solidified this ship forever. I quite enjoy the premise of seeming competitors, who mostly fight and bicker, ending up liking each other in the end once they discover the beauty that lies within. And watching how Akko slowing melted Diana’s icy heart and helped her realize that her traditional views may not always be correct/the most important (in addition to Diana inspiring Akko to work as hard as possible) was just so beautiful, and shows how perfect they are for each other. They make such a formidable team who can defeat anything gets in their way. Their attraction seemed very evident in the last couple of episodes, and I really wish I had the opportunity to watch their relationship grow. Oh and of course there’s that added bonus of a muggle being with a true-born witch.

“Yes, Akko. I’m a descendant of a prestigious family of witches and wizards with a history dating back to ancient times. Don’t compare me with someone like you, who came just because you fell for some tasteless magic show. There’s no way we can get along.”

Day #30: Eli x Umi (Love Live)

This is the final day of yuri ships. I’m terribly sad about it, but I hope everyone had an excellent pride month. I saved one of my absolute favorites for last, in the hopes of a memorable send off.

This ship is so special to me, mainly because it was my first yuri ship (so the nostalgic points provide considerable weight). I remember first getting into Love Live and exploring the content that existed on the internet. I had no idea that this show was shipped so heavily and that the pairs were so endless. At first, I didn’t understand the appeal and continued to think of them all as mere friends. But then the yuri fandom came crashing down on me out of nowhere, hitting me like a truck. And after that I knew there was absolutely no escape from this world, nor did I ever want to leave. It started when I came upon a doujin of EliUmi by tMnR,called “The Secret Shokolad.” I read it purely out of curiosity at first (and since I’d previously seen some fan art of the two), but did not expect to love it as much as I did. I mean it was SO GOOD. The relationship between Eli and Umi, and how the author perfectly captured their personalities, floored me, and I became an avid EliUmi shipper ever since. That paved the way for other ships to form and caused me to start reading actual yuri manga. It completely opened up the genre to me, in which I will be forever grateful. tMnR is a godsend. But besides it acting as the catalyst, I realized how perfectly Eli and Umi go together. They’re both the studious, mature, and responsible type who uses those traits to lead μ’s to unimaginable success. Additionally, Eli possesses a more assertive personality, which would perfectly compliment the shy and easily embarrassed Umi. So despite the fact that they don’t interact that much in the show (which is a real shame), the chemistry between them is undeniable, and tMnR will provide evidence if you don’t believe me.

Day #13: Mari x Kanan (Love Live Sunshine)

Okay so I was planning on posting this on the last day (June 30th) since this is arguably my favorite anime ship of all time, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to post my favorite Mari ship on her birthday. So Happy Birthday Mari! I hope it’s filled with coffee and lemons (because apparently those are her favorite foods…). I am just absolutely obsessed with these two and love them so much. It became solidified after episode nine aired when they finally reconciled. Everything about that episode was so emotional, ranging from Mari falling down in the rain to the slap planted across Kanan’s face, and it really showed insight into the complexity of their feelings towards one another. Kanan was willing to sacrifice her best friend (and love of her life…) for Mari’s future, and Mari was unwilling to allow Kanan to emotionally isolate herself and push her away permanently. Kanan perfectly exemplifies the saying “if you love someone set them free.” Their bond is so deep and they just perfectly complement each other. They get along extremely well, making their relationship seem effortless and natural. Sometimes they can be such dorks (but lovable ones at that). Additionally, Kanan became Mari’s first friend and helped break her out of her shell, and Mari provided her with exciting experiences. Kanan is Mari’s SHINing star, and she isn’t complete without Kanan being in her life.

Day #16: Chika x Riko (Love Live Sunshine)

I absolutely love this ship (top five material right here) and can never get enough of Kougi’s artwork. Everyday a new picture is posted by them I feel as though my day has been blessed. These two are perfect for one another (despite the fact that I also ship YouRiko...) and seeing how their relationship helps each other grow throughout the show (namely season 1 in reality) is truly beautiful. Riko needed a resilient and passionate leader to shove her in the right direction so that she could rediscover her passion of piano (and discover a new passion of school idols). Riko, in turn, provided Chika with encouragement when she was feeling defeated (breakdown in the ocean anyone?) and helped her keep a level head. They provide each other with checks and balances by constantly helping each other up but also keeping in check with reality (there weren’t always going to be victories). And let’s not forget the fact that they are so adorable together, and they radiate chemistry. I don’t think any of us will forget the beach scene when Riko confesses her undying love for this mikan loving dork. Aqours heavily relied on these two, which mirrors how they rely on each other. That’s mutualism right there. It’s just so beautiful.
