So I know I’ve spoken of how the battle with Lucas impacted Volkner, but not Dawn?? I’ve mentioned how I hc that Lucas challenged Volkner first, then Dawn. Both battles inspired him -- reminded him of why he’d wanted to become Gym Leader in the first place. We’ve talked about how Dawn’s battling style is similar to Volkner’s, and that would have stood out to him. She was the one who really kept him on edge, and provided a unique challenge that he never expected. He wondered if that was what battles felt like for his challengers. I don’t think he laughed after his battle with Lucas, but he did after Dawn, a hearty, vitalized laughter. He wanted to see just how far the young trainer would go.Â
We’ve also talked about this briefly in private, but I just want to put it out there. Volkner will never call her Hikari. It will always be Dawn. No, I was serious. His father’s name is Hikaru, and that is just way too close for his comfort.Â
At some point, Dawn meets Volkner’s mother completely by chance, and his mom just??? falls in love with her. After Dawn moves to Unova, Tomomi periodically sends little care packages with... kind of traditionally girly things, like clothes, scented candles, gift cards to spas along with cute little inspiring messages. Volkner may or may not send them as well, very occasionally. But he always pretends the packages were sent by his mother.Â
He actually keeps an eye out for what Dawn’s getting up to. He could always ask her personally, but he’s actually among the people who don’t like to send the first message unless there’s something impersonal to talk about.Â
