I have been getting into mini disc lately. I knew a few people who were die hard MD fans, up until now didn't understand why. It was format released by Sony in 1992. It was a recordable portable format to compete with Compact Cassette. CDs were a pain in the ass to carry and play on the go. So you could take a CD player and record directly to the MD. The MD is a magnito-Optical disc which can be erased and recorded over and over again. You could reorganize tracks by changing their order, adding track names and even editing the start and end times. It is like a floppy disk but so much better. Over time Sony updated the format to add MP3 like features with NetMD. Instead of recording with a line in or Toslink you could plug in a USB cable and add songs and type in tracks. Due to insane DRM it never caught on like the iPod. In 2004 Sony created a new disc called Hi-MD which increased the storage from 80 mins (150MB) to 8 hours (1GB). You could take the older 80min discs and reformat them to double the capacity with Hi-MD recorders. Only problem is you can't play those recordings on the older players. It is a cool piece of tech. I am going to get more discs in the future and really commit to it.
