(Please tag w/ hhmd) I'm struggling to live with my disability at the moment. I'm at the hospital so often it's ridiculous and my pain is so bad that of it wasn't for the anti depressants I'm on (I take them for nerve pain) I probably would have killed myself as the pain is so bad. Recently the meds haven't been working so well and my pain is getting worse again. I'm 17 so my doctors refuse to give me anything stronger while shaming me for my wheelchair and accusing me of faking it all.
Anon,
I am so sorry that you are going through this experience, and having doctors who are invalidating that experience for you. The reality is that it's YOUR experience and YOUR health; it should not matter what other people are saying because they are not going through the pain.
While I don't know your medical history, it sounds like something I've been going through with my fibromyalgia. Since last week, my pain has gotten worse even with medication(I take an anti-depressant and a mild, long term pain reliever) and have been using my cane more than usual. Maybe it's the season change(as it's finally getting colder where I live) where it's temporary, or I might need a higher dose or a med change.
Unfortunately, it is a bit harder to give you a solid suggestion, since you are 17 and not yet legal age. However, I would make it a point to talk to your parents about what is happening and that you need medical help so you be able to physically function. Because if your doctors aren't helping you find alternatives to reduce your pain, you should definitely be looking for another doctor who WILL take you seriously and help you. I've gotten lucky in that my doctor DOES take my fibromyalgia diagnosis and pain experience seriously, so there are medical providers out there that can help you as well. Not everyone will invalidate your experience; unfortunately, we live in a world where chronic pain and illnesses that are invisible to anyone's eyes aren't taken seriously. I advocate for myself on a daily basis; everyone, including my coworkers, know about my condition. They know that if I'm using my cane, that I'm having a bad pain day and that I need to take it easy. If anyone shamed me for using my cane, I would definitely said something and speak up about my experience. Because my pain and my experience is real. In my life, my mom is the one who doesn't understand what I'm going through and I have to speak up and explain this to her on an almost daily basis; this can be exhausting, but I refuse to let anyone discard what I'm experiencing.
I've kind of rambled in the second part of the last paragraph, but I guess my point is that even though you're 17: 1) your experience is still valid and 2) that doesn't not mean you can't advocate for yourself and what you need, because you absolutely can and you absolutely should. Reach out to your parents and tell them what you need; and if it's difficult to talk to them about it, please reach out to another adult in your life who WILL listen. Please do not give up on getting what you need to feel better. If I wasn't so persistent, I definitely would be worse off than I would be.
Keep Strong and Keep Moving,
Turtle Girl
