Just received my copy of the @UNLV Alumni Magazine highlighting the schools 60th Anniversary, including eight full color illustrations by me! They were also kind enough to share a story about my time at UNLV as mascot Hey Reb! and my illustration work. Big thanks to Cate Weeks and Jason Scavone for their guidance through this awesome project. To read the articles and see all the illustrations just Google "UNLV Turns 60". #unlv #gorebs #heyreb #editorialillustration #illustration
People are fired up about the new UNLV logo
People are really fired up about the new UNLV Athletics logo. Let’s be clear, UNLV has 2 different logos, the UNLV University logo and the UNLV Athletics logo featuring the mascot Hey Reb. Also referred to at the spirit mark.
The UNLV Athletics logo received an update and people lost their minds with dislike. I’m sure many others like it. I personally like the modern look and flat design.
Official Unveiling: https://lasvegassun.com/news/2017/jun/28/rebels-unveil-refreshed-logo/
BUT...all the elements of the new logo are not immediately apparent. There’s sort of an optical illusion going on here where we are not sure whether to focus on the color light grey or black that make up the face and moustache of Hey Reb. Then their are the less obvious elements such as the background mountains and Las Vegas sign.
Should a logo require this much explanation to understand? I also think the “UNLV” letters look disjointed from the spirit mark. Is this one logo or two?
Of course, it’s not as bad as any of these: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-15-worst-corporate-logo-fails-2014-1#
About halfway down this page someone tweaked the colors of the logo and I actually think it’s an improvement and makes the face of Hey Reb easier to depict. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/06/unlv-new-logo-rebels-ripped-twitter-reactions-memes-photos
My verdict, keep the new logo, it’s cool and modern, but make some tweaks to the colors so it’s easier to depict Hey Reb’s face.
BTW, this was the former logo.
