I just saw the question about My neighbor Totoro you answered, and that movie actually has a pretty cool/dark back story. You should research it. Short story is it has a subplot of a murder/kidnapping that happened in a small town.
I actually knew this! No like, I really was not trying to hate on Totoro or demean it or anything, it just didn't have as much of an impact as other Ghibli films have. I think because it was geared clearly towards children more, so it obviously couldn't have the dark overtones or even more subtle thematic points. I felt about the same as Ponyo, which to be had a similar children-geared theme.
