Native to Europe, North Africa, and the Canary Islands, but present in New Zealand since 1979, at least. It may have been introduced much earlier, possibly as eggs attached to the roots of European Marram Grass Ammophila arenaria, although their usual diet is the stinging nettle, Urtica dioica. Since nettles and marram grass are now horrendous weeds in New Zealand, they'd probably be welcomed with open arms if it wasn't for the problem of accidentaly sending them to other parts of the world in crates of NZ produce.
