Disbelief and the News
I don't want to get too political.
I can. Oh, I can. This blog is about myself, and because of that I think it comes with natural political inclinations. I've said before: I'm a girl in my twenties, raised in Connecticut under a pretty liberal household (I wanted to type agenda there to be sarcastic, because that word is always funny - like my parents planned out from my birth how to indoctrinate me into a belief, and somehow sheltered me from outside influences).
But I wanted this to be about is disbelief. Of how hesitant we are to believe things today. I was out with my friends last night when the Trayvon Martin verdict came in - and with one source to read off of on our cell phones, we all waited. Maybe it was the disbelief that we wanted some sort of consequence from this, but there was a level that none of us today can believe the first news source. Or the second. It's not until all the news outlets have weighed in that we can feel confident of any reporting - at least, the factual base. You can't tell whether George Zimmermann is actually guilty or not based on the news, because everyone has some sort of bias when reporting that - but, you can factually say that the State of Florida has found him not guilty.
But, we shouldn't be the ones hesitating to believe a source. We shouldn't have lost our faith in news sources, because they should have remained accurate. With the internet allowing information to spread almost instantaneously, you would think reporters would be more nervous about double-checking their sources instead of a desire to be first. None of us remember where they read any news report first, but I can tell you when I laughed or groaned about somebody misreporting something.
So until then, I will cross-check my reports. But how I wish things could really be different.
Me and My Voice
Me: I think I get it.
Voice: I'm sure you do.
Me: Yeah, I understand how she sees me. I'm happy where I'm at. I don't need to chase.
Voice: Sounds like a form of giving up.
Me: Well, to me, it is an acceptance of my situation.
Voice: A justification for your giving up. If you really want it, keep yourself going for it.
Me: You have such high standards...
Voice: That comes with the high expectation. It is love, after all. Love was never meant to be easy in the first place.
Nothing like realizing the world is in front of you, but yet the pull of hesitation and wonder carry you ever so slightly to the edge; hanging there, standing there, cool and excited.
