“really? that sounds so interesting.” words spoken in the same sort of tone that a disinterested popular girl would give the nerdy guy in the movies. chin held in the palm of his hand, he was practically looking through the other male and clearly not listening to what he was saying. “back to me now?”

heart seemed to jump into the vigilante’s throat the words from the other. their line of work meant that they were, technically, always in trouble and never off the clock. not really. there were different kinds of pain that came with being a city hero and raleigh didn’t seem to know which one his partner was talking about. he had a pretty good idea, of course, because joey was different now. raleigh couldn’t make himself verbally admit that it was his fault but that was what he thought. what he knew, actually.

“that’s very romantic,” raleigh laughed quietly and guided his partner back into the apartment.
did they have to climb through the window? maybe. but they were at his apartment, a safe space, and that was all that mattered. the hits that he had taken through the night of patrol had turned into ugly bruises long before they were done for the night. there may even have been some blood but the vigilante wasn’t too worried about that. what he was worried about was joey and how he was after patrol.
“c’mon. let me look at you,” he said and held his face rather forcefully so he could check him over.
