A flashback to a couple of years ago when the Hermès Festival Des Metiers was in Sydney - the same show has just finished a run at Melbourne Town Hall as ‘Hermès at Work’. Of course Hermès is known for being phenomenally expensive, but this exhibition gives some insight into what that kind of investment in quality looks like behind the scenes. The image on the light box is a colour separation for a classic Hermès silk scarf - each colour of the scarf hand drawn on a separate acetate sheet - incredible craftsmanship when you realise there can be over 40 different colours in one artwork - that means 40 different sheets. The next pic is of the screen printing set up. Each one of those acetate sheets was translated into a screen ready to be inked as a single colour - the blue is the blocking (non-print area). Very accurate registration (lining up) of the colours is essential, so this screen bed locks into place to ensure each of those colours is aligned perfectly, ready for the artist to squeegee the ink through onto the silk. Obviously Australia is becoming an increasingly important market for these brands. It’s all incredibly seductive. We’ve had the giant (some say advertorial) Dior show at the @ngvmelbourne, @louisvuitton has set up its international touring exhibition at the Chadstone shopping mall and now this rather lovely exposition of craft by Hermès...
