Such were my 12 year old thoughts during my first summer camp. 😉 It was only for two weeks, but homesickness overwhelmed me like a wave hitting from behind. I'm sure my daily letter home that they made us write sang these blues like Lady Day in her prime. I could imagine her soft and bourbon-smooth voice coaxing a lonesome sax player's wailing (not many 12 year olds were into Billie Holiday, but her Strange Fruit grabbed me, and I hadn't learned about the Beatles, yet). So I'm moping around like a sad-eyed dog, and about 7 o'clock at night my dad comes strolling into camp with two large watermelons under his arms. He said that on the way, he happened upon a truck full of them that had broken down. He had a couple more in the car. He treated our troop to the melons. I suddenly felt on top of the world! Dads can be such heroes. Since my wife's gardens are going strong right now, Here's a look at one her peach trees. It's called Canadian Harmony (Canada is very near and dear to us!). It's a delicious yellow peach. I know this is a common type of photo...but it's ours! 😊I watched my wife work so hard growing these: spraying organic powders, wrapping some in stockings to let in light, but keeping bugs out--didn't really work.
