Reposted from @earnyourleisure - Gentrification highlights something that’s very interesting. Government housing and slum villages were built in areas on the outskirts of major cities. The ironic part is that those areas are actually some of the most valuable locations on Earth. Now people realize that, and the trend to reverse what was done is taking effect on a global scale. Two examples of this is Queensbridge projects in New York City and the Vidigal favela in Rio de Janeiro. Queensdrige is the largest housing projects in North America and home to a long list of rap icons that include Nas and Mobb Deep. Queensbridge has breathtaking views of Manhattan. The area surrounding the projects has now been built up with fancy restaurants and million dollar condos. Early this year Amazon was planning on making the neighborhood home to it’s new 6,000 square foot headquarters. Amazon’s move was scrapped, due to backlash from the community and politicians. Vidigal was once the most dangerous Favela in Brazil. Now the police occupy the area and it’s a race for investors to buy property. Much like Queensbridge the value is due to the speculutar views. The hills overlook some of the most famous beaches in the World. They threw away lemons, and then realized how much you can make off lemonade.
