Hello! I was reading TWOIAF and I had a pre-ASOiAF magic question. Why is it that only the Targaryens remained dragon lords after the Doom? TWOIAF clearly states that many of Valyrian blood flourish in Volantis to the current period. Immediately after the Doom they even tried to 'claim Valyria's mantle'. So my question is why didn't these people get dragons for themselves to make the process easier? There were surely some dragons or dragon eggs lying around and they had the magical blood. (1/2)
The Targaryens were the only dragonlords after the Doom of Valyria because they were the only family of dragonlords that survived the Doom and the events afterwards. That sounds like a tautology, but itâs not. :) There were Valyrians and people of Valyrian blood that survived the Doom, in Volantis and elsewhere, but they werenât dragonlords. In Westeros, for example, the Velaryons and Celtigars were also Valyrian expatriates, but they werenât dragonlords, they werenât of the forty noble families who had ruled Valyria, and they never had dragons.š
Though yes, there were some non-Targaryen dragonlords who also escaped the Doom⌠but only briefly:
Some accounts claim that a few others survived, too⌠for a time. It is said that some Valyrian dragonlords in Tyrosh and Lys were spared, but that in the immediate political upheaval following the Doom, they and their dragons were killed by the citizens of those Free Cities. The histories of Qohor likewise claim that a visiting dragonlord, Aurion, raised forces from the Qohorik colonists and proclaimed himself the first Emperor of Valyria. He flew away on the back of his great dragon, with thirty thousand men following behind afoot, to lay claim to what remained of Valyria and to reestablish the Freehold. But neither Emperor Aurion nor his host were ever seen again. âTWOIAF
Those few dragonlords to survive the Doom died soon after, along with their dragons. As for your statement about the Valyrians in Volantis who tried to claim Valyriaâs mantle, TWOIAF answers you straight up:
Volantis, the mightiest of the Free Cities, quickly laid claim to Valyriaâs mantle. Men and women of noble Valyrian blood, though not dragonlords, called for war upon the other cities.
They werenât dragonlords. They didnât have dragons. No, there were not just âdragons lying aroundâ, all the dragons in Valyria died in the Doom. Theyâre not cats, random people didnât just have them as pets. Theyâre dragons. You had to be a dragonlord to have and ride a dragon, thatâs what the title means. (Note also that itâs specifically said that the dragonlord families were the ones who married incestuously âto keep the blood of the dragon pureâ, not other Valyrians.)
(2/2) is it just that in 300 years they couldnât get their hands on dragons or hatch dragon eggs? could it be because you donât only need Valyrian blood but also some kind of magical craft and knowledge to birth and/or tame dragons? Which the Targs had while no one in Essos with Valyrian blood did?
Yes, thatâs it exactly. Apparently you canât just hatch dragon eggs (if you even have one â theyâre priceless, and always heavily guarded) without a dragon or without being a dragonlord. And it was believed that you couldnât ride a dragon without having the magical âblood of the dragonâ, for that matter, so if any wild or free-roaming dragon did survive the Doom, anyone who tried to catch and tame them surely died.²
The dragonlords of Valyria controlled their dragons with âbinding spells and sorcerous horns.â Itâs uncertain if any of that magic survived among the Targaryens (none of the stories of Aegon the Conqueror or his descendants mention them),Âł but surely there was nobody who had that magical knowledge or those magical horns in Volantis or elsewhere in Essos after the Doom.â´ So those surviving Targaryen dragonlords made do with their âblood of the dragonâ to establish a connection and control of their dragons. If you didnât have magic and if you didnât have the magical blood, it doesnât matter if you were of Valyrian descent, you were shit-outta-luck.
In which case, how will Dany control her dragons in ASOIAF? I mean she managed this miraculous event to birth them but if you do need further arts to control them I wonder who will teach herâŚ
âDaenerys made do with a word and a whip.â Drogon does obey his mother, if not perfectly. Their bond, plus her magical blood, evidently helps. However, a dragonrider can only control one dragon in their lifetime, so itâs the other two dragons, Viserion and Rhaegal, that are in question. But Euron Greyjoy has apparently found one of those magical Valyrian dragonhorns, so the possession of Dragonbinder will evidently be very important in the future. And Tyrion Lannister has studied dragons extensively, so his knowledge will also be very helpful when he and Dany eventually meet (or if he gets to a dragon before that event). Archmaester Marwyn also knows sorcery (he is the master of âthe higher mysteriesâ in the Citadel, and has even lit a glass candle) as well as dragon-knowledge (via all the books heâs found and studied, including scraps of Daenys the Dreamerâs prophecies), and heâs on his way to Dany.âľ Between all these things, Danyâs three dragons will be controlled, in one way or another.
Could you do the "I dressed slutty but it's really cold, can I please borrow your jacket or something?" Halloween prompt for Elia x Lyanna?
âarenât you northerners supposed to be always prepared for the cold?â elia teased and lyanna glared at her, crossing her arms over her chest. Â she was shivering. Â âwarm blooded and all that? Â didnât your brother do a naked mile in the middle of january?â
âare you going to give me the scarf or not?â lyanna asks. Â her teeth are chattering.
elia laughs quietly as she unwraps it  from around her neck and pops the collar of her jacket up a little higher before tossing it to lyanna, who does her best to cover her neckline and arms with it. Â
ânot sure how much good this will do,â she mutters. Â âthe skirtâs still so damn short.â
elia wraps an arm around her. Â âwell if youâre cold,â she breathes into lyannaâs ear, and lyanna turns her head towards her and grins.

3. Would you have an owl, cat, or toad?I used to say cat, but... no. I like not waking up to puke at 4am, even if itâs just a dream since I have a cat already. Owls are really intelligent and long-lived, and I could use a companion more than a pet.
20. Favourite Death Eater? All the dead ones.
Hiieeeeeee! Okay first of all the sorting of your blog is SO AMAZING I swear you're gonna get an avalanche of random likes and reblogs from me (and many others) since you've made it extremely easy for us to stalk your blog now :D It must have taken so much time and efforts you're amazing!!! And second I have a random question which I felt was suited for an ask so here goes. I was thinking about it (and i did a little research too lol) and for the crimes Shyam committed I don't think he's getting more than 12-15 years in jail (MAX). And that's me being generous and assuming Shashi communicated the attempted murder to Arnav who then used his resources to ensure that's added to Shyam's crime list. Because max punishment for attempted murder is 10 + max punishment for killing a foetus is 5 and even if you add the kidnapping and other random stuff it doesn't amount to more than 20 years total and usually you're allowed to serve at least some of it concurrently than consequently unless you're like a brutal serial killer or something and anyway considering good behaviour they let you usually get a few years off at the end. Shyam seems slimy and manipulative enough to swing that. Lol sorry for the legal deep dive but my actual question is - let's assume 10-15 yrs after the events of the show Shyam is released, what do you think he will do? I know in a soap opera world this is a great set up for like Return of the Villain type of storyline but from a more...realistic perspective, do you think his obsession and hatred would have increased, and he would pursue revenge? Or just stay away from the Raizadas for the rest of his life? Would he be a threat to them? Okay sorry for the long ask and thanks :)
Hello sweetie,
Haha I'm glad you're loving the sorting! I also have my main navigation pinned (so it's the first post anyone sees) and it should make things easier in general.
Also, thank you for the love.
So your question is, once Shyam's time at prison is over (considering he went there for 15 years counting all his crimes) would he come back and get revenge?
My question to you is - would Shyam even be successful? As an ex convict there's already going a lot of eyes on Shyam and his movements will be tracked. I'm pretty sure there are solid trespassing orders where Shyam cannot live in the same city as any Raizada, Gupta, near associate of the Raizadas and Guptas (Arnav is that influential to get strict trespassing orders).
Shyam will not have any money to do anything. Not to hire any stalkers, any goons, anything. He might go to Dadi again (but even over there there would be trespassing orders).
Shyam is vengeful. But his chances at succeeding in anything is close to zero. When he had no restrictions, he struggled to succeed. With restrictions in place - it's pretty impossible.
I'm sure Khushi, Anjali, Shashi and Arnav would be pretty anxious when Shyam is released from jail and they'll take every measure possible to actually protect the family.
Anjali's child also died - so Shyam has no right nor connection to the Raizadas/Guptas. Since we also never knew what Shyam's motivations are - we also don't know what extend he'd go to.
I do feel the family will feel ultimate peace at Shyam's death.
Best,
JWB

@herelivesahobbit reblogged your photoset âsansacfwinterfell: sansa stark â persephone â
#Omg... I just got it #Petyr offered her a pomegranate and she refused #She's in the Underworld now #Incognito hidden missing assumed dead #Also in the power of someone who seems to be pulling lot of strings and has caused several deaths #Seemingly going down a dark path #Dark in several ways: she's pushing her true self in the dark her identity is in the dark her true desires and wishes are in the dark #She's also morally darker which stems from her perhaps wilful ignorance #And it's not all bad! She's having fun she's queen of the little kingdom Petyr has set up for her #And in some ways she's grateful to him for giving her this power and safety and protection #But it's still not her first choice and he got her there by trickery #And she! Didn't! Eat! Pomergranate Seeds! #Don't tell me GRRM didn't know what he was doing #She's getting the hell out of hell and not looking back #She's gonna find the light which is going to begin with her inner bulb going on#When she's finally confronts all the realities she's been avoiding #She finally makes informed choices as someone with agency #That's going to be her happy ending
Yes, good. Never forget, Sansa chose a pear instead. Ah man, Sansa refusing the role of Persephone makes for some of my most favoite metaphorical images, even poetry...
