Herbstalk 2016

Welcome to a late night edition of the #fivedaysofherbstalk (more like #fiveNIGHTSofherbstalk, amirite?)! Russian Comfrey is a magical type of comfrey that doesn't set seed and, as a result, is not invasive and stays right where you plant it. That said, it REALLY stays where you plant it (due to its exceptionally deep roots), so plunk it in full to part-sun in a spot where you'll want it to live forever. Comfrey works wonders on the skin, performing miracles on bruises, chapped knuckles, and cuts. This plant is so amazing at healing that it actually can't be used on deep cuts as it will cause skin to grow back before it has fully healed! Comfrey is also known as a "dynamic accumulator," meaning that its deep roots mine minerals from deep underground and bring them to the surface by way of their leaves, thus making them available to plants with more shallow root systems. Leaves can be cut, allowed to wilt, and then used as mulch or added to the compost profile to provide a host of good stuff for all the beauties growing in your garden. Its flowers also attract and provide for some of New England's best beneficial insects (like bumblebees!).
