View down a microscope of a haemocytometer - a simple cell-counting slide (taken with camera phone :P). You take some of your sample, dilute it in the dye trypan blue, and load it onto the slide. The area containing the grid is recessed by a known amount, so if you count the number of cells in it (live cells appear white because they exclude the dye) you can work out the concentration of cells in your original sample by doing some really basic multiplication.
