A clanging noise interrupted mine and Harry’s conversation as we ate our dinner. I looked up to see Gemma getting up off her seat from down the table. My reaction was to cover my face immediately, and I could tell Harry’s reaction was much similar to mine.
“Oh God,” I breathed. Harry leaned against me, his body vibrating with laughter.
“Well hello there everyone,” she chimed, picking up a microphone. She moved to the front of the table. “My brother is finally married everyone!” she yelled, a light laugh echoing through the speakers.
“Now, as I was the maid of honor, I was given the ultimate gift of giving a speech on behalf of the beautiful bride, Emerald. I’m sure you all know her, she’s been pushed aside to Princess until her coronation date is all set,” she said as she turned around to give me a wink. I shook my head at her.
“So most people tell all these sappy stories how they grew up together, yada yada yada,” Gemma said, waving her hand around. “Yeah, that’s not me. I am no where near that creative for that kind of bullshitting right now. So I made up a list of things to say when I was still very much sober, and if you can’t tell… I am very much not sober right now. Whoo!” she giggled as she pulled out a piece of paper and read aloud her list:
1. Emerald, you better use my gift to you
2. I don’t want to know when you use my gift because that’s gross and you married my brother.
3. My nieces and nephews will like me better than you, simple as that.
4. Harry, you suck.
5. No really, Harry you suck.
I let out a giggle, turning to look at Harry who was shaking his head.
6. Emerald, please for the love of God don’t refuse him anymore. He’s driven me up the wall enough by you saying it’s too early. Seriously.
“This is the part of my list that I ran out of things to say, so here’s some jokes,”Gemma said. “What do you get when you cross and owl and a rooster? A cock that stays up all night long.”
“And that’s our queue,” Harry said, standing up and walking over to Gemma, taking her microphone. “Let’s give Gemma a round of applause for that uh…lovely, and highly entertaining speech.”
