Palmate newt survey
I am a registered surveyor for Amphibian and Reptile Conservation and today I carried out the first of this year’s Amphibian surveys on a pond I’ve been surveying for 5 years. I was delighted to see that the healthy population of Palmate Newts (Lissotriton helveticus) are still there, accompanied by an excellent community of fresh water invertebrates. These include damselfly larvae and blood worms, the larvae of the non-biting midge. I was also pleased to find the Great Ramshorn Snail (Planorbarius corneus) , which had been busy laying its eggs on the Marsh Marigold leaves (Caltha palustris).
