Helsigās RTK and I.
Remembering the Kanji (RTK) isnāt a great accompaniment if you are first studying Japanese, especially if you are new to Kanji and are being taught specific ones with your course. However, I find that RTK has been invaluable in strengthening my kanji now that I am around the 700 or so mark.
I am studying Kanji in different ways simultaneously at the moment. One of them happens to be Helsigās Remembering the Kanji. The other is in conjunction with my courseās kanji requirements) I decided to start after already having learnt 700 or so Kanji required for intermediate level Japanese. Although Ā I should know more than 700, itās not all 100% learnt.
So, Iāve been doing RTK for a few weeks now, doing a bit everyday very consistently. Ā I make sure to review the stories everyday without fail even when I donāt add new ones.Ā
One of the problems I faced with memorising kanji in compounds is that, often Ā I donāt connect any meaning to the individual kanji. I just learnt it and drilled them in flashcards. If I didnāt flashcard for a week, itād be forgotten. So for compounds like 且親ćI just learn the compound as it without looking up on/kun readings or even their individual meanings. In retrospect, that was a silly way to go about it. It brought me to intermediate level Japanese though (thank you brain) so Iāve been doing okay with just memorising kanji in compounds.Ā
Until now. Ā (I went on holiday and didnāt touch Anki for three weeks, I opened up Anki and didnāt know ANYTHING being shown to me)
Ā This is why Iāve been using RTK, I like that it isnāt giving me the kanji to learn in the order I learnt them up till now, so half of it is new to me so far (Iām at around 200 or so right now). However, Iām already seeing benefits.
Kanji compounds Iāve constantly forgotten are now becoming a lot easier to remember. Iām also able to recognise the meaning of kanji Iāve never seen before like: Illegitimate childĀ ē§ēå (ććććļ¼. The first two kanji I know, the last one came up in RTK (baby). The author of the book Iām reading mentioned adultery shortly followed by this word. It was pretty easy to get the meaning from context! I was shocked. Thank you Helsig!
