The rest of placement.... (It was only 2 weeks!?)
I was so wrecked from placement that I didn't have a chance to fill u in much after day 1. It was not what I expected in a lot of ways, however it exceeded expectation in other ways. I enjoyed my time there, and was even a bit sad to leave in the end. So to quickly fill u in on what happened over my placement... - Day 2 I had a lovely afternoon learning, even got to draw up basal bolus insulin. But in the evening I met a horrible nurse who embarrassed and belittled me in front of other staff and refused to train me. I left in tears and reported her behaviour to my facilitator the next day. -Day 3 a patient was sleeping so soundly I couldn't wake him and I thought he had died. Scared me mainly cos his obs hadn't been finished as all the SaO2 machines were being used and then he went to an appt. -Day 4 I was allocated to the wench nurse and asked to be moved. Was put with 2 RNs who gave me the patients requiring assisted toileting and had very little to do -Day 5 got to make decisions about my patients based on my opinion. Made someone's day a bit brighter. Lmao at a sputum sample that a fellow nursing student described as a little oyster. -Day 6 Had my own patient load, was exhausted, nothing exciting. -Day 7 took care of the same patients. Built fabulous rapport with my patients. -Day 8 same again. Learnt some new skills by watching the 2nd yr students -Day 9 was paired with wench nurse, she wouldn't let me assist her. I went to do BGLs and then a patient rang so I told her I would do them in 2 secs. So she took my kit and did it. In the end I sat on my butt. Was so over it. -Day 10 Given new patients, showered a little old lady who had amputated toes and bandaged feet. As she was patting herself dry she ripped her cannula out. I was kitted for mrsa so I hit the staff bell and waited. Her arm gushing blood due to her warfarin. 5mins later someone came in and dressed her arm while I cleaned up the blood everywhere. The lady then accidentally stepped one foot in water and the other came undone so had to redress both feet. I was wrecked afterwards. And so I put in job applications and am waiting to hear back from a PCA role after an interview and medical. Yes I know I said I would never work in aged care, however it's great money, extra experience, additional training and will look great for my GMP. 🎶You can't always get what you want, but if u try sometime, u may find, u get what u need🎶 TTFN xx
