Chapter Six: Somebody To Love
I don't know what time it was when I fell asleep but I assumed it was pretty early in the night by how early I woke up. Robin was snoring lightly next to me, her arm wrapped loosely around my waist. Stretching out my limbs I removed Robins arm from me, earning a small groan of protest from my movement. I tucked my bear under arm as my replacement and slid out of bed as slowly as I could so I wouldn't disturb her.
Quietly I crept into the kitchen heading straight for the old coffee maker on the counter, searching every cupboard until I found everything I needed. When the coffee was done, I took a mug full and headed outside, back down to the dock in the darling morning light. It looked like it might be a cloudy day and I silently thanked mother nature for it.
Sitting with my legs crossed I held my mug of coffee close to my chest, letting it warm me. I wasn't alone for very long when I heard the creak of the backdoor open behind me. Turning around to see Eddie, slowly making his way down the hill, the few steps onto the dock, and towards me. I gave him a soft smile, squinting up at him before he came to sit down next to me.
"G'morning teddy" I said with a teasing tone.
"I was wondering if you remembered calling me that" His voice was still low and raspy, filled with sleep.
"It was very much a conscious decision" I said smiling into my cup of coffee. "How come you're awake so early?" I asked, tilting my head to the side to look at him. He glowed in the dim morning light, his hair up in a half bun, most of it tucked out of his face.
"Got up to use the bathroom and noticed you were missing, had to come make sure you weren't out here drowning again" He nudged my shoulder with his.
I cringed. "God that was so embarrassing, you've seen me in so many shitty situations since I've been here" I said covering my face with my hands.
"Ahhh" he waved off my comment with his hand. "Could be worse"
I leaned my head onto his shoulder. His one arm coming around my back, resting against me. I felt him lean down to kiss me on the top of my head and I tried my best not to smile, knowing he would feel my cheek move on his shoulder.
He hummed in content, face tilted towards the small space of sun peeking out through the clouds, his eyes closed.
We sat like that for a few moments, just enjoying each others company, one of my feet swirling in the water, causing quiet ripples to echo around us.
"Can I ask you something?" Eddie said quietly. I moved my head off of his shoulder, turning to look at him.
"Course you can"
"When you said that you try to make everyone happy, so no one is as sad as you used to be..." He trailed off before starting again. "What's the story? If it's okay to ask"
I smiled at him, looking back out at the open water. "I just had a hard time growing up, my parents died when I was six, in some car accident, so I never really knew them all that well. My aunt took me in, not because she wanted to, and her kids didn't like me so I was kind of isolated my whole life, alone and quiet, shy, and just so sad" I took a deep breath. "I had a lot of emotions and didn't know how to deal with them, so I started taking it out on myself" My hands ghosted over my thighs, knowing the faint thin scars were still there.
Eddies eyes softened. "It was the only way I could feel something, the only time I felt in control of myself, because I wasn't able to control the emotions... So I just uh" I almost didn't want to say it out loud, like if I did Eddie wouldn't look at me the same, like everything around us would suddenly just crumble. So instead of using words, I set my coffee down and pulled up both sleeves of the sweater I was wearing. Turning to face Eddie, my arms resting on my legs with my wrists facing up. The scars weren't that noticeable anymore, but if you looked hard enough you could tell.
Eddies touches were soft and slow, each graze of his fingertips sending tiny shockwaves up my arms and straight to my heart. He traced a few lines, his thumb smoothing over others before he reached up and tugged my sleeves back down, holding my hands in his. "I'm sorry" He said quietly, bringing my hands up to his face, he planted a delicate kiss to skin on the back of one of them.
I smiled, tugging my hands so he would bring our intertwined fingers closer to me. I brought our hands up to my face and leaned forward until my lips barely touched his skin, I watched him intently as I gave his hand a tiny nibble before placing a small kiss on top. He laughed, and it echoed inside of me, radiating every part of my body with warmth.
"Don't be sorry Eds" The nickname somehow easily rolling off my tongue. "I'm not sad like that anymore" I said pausing with a sigh "Although, the world may still be shitty, there are some really fucking great things about it"
His eyes were hard to read, I couldn't tell if it was bewilderment, amusement, or love; Maybe even all three swirled together. Loosening his hold on my hands he placed them back into my lap before reaching to hold both sides of my face, his thumb smoothing down the skin, just under my eye, causing them to flutter close out of reflex.
When I opened my eyes again he was looking at me still, a small smile on the corner of his mouth.
"Hi" I said shyly.
"Hi" He said back. "Can I kiss you?" He asked, his hands holding my face a little tighter.
"Please?" I nodded.
It was a slow kiss. He leaned in, brushing his nose against the side of mine, hands still warm where they held my face, like if he let go I would disappear. I felt my heart slamming in my chest, and I knew he could feel it under his pinkie, that pressed that tender spot just below my ear.
Time stood still, just like the first night I met him, watching him up on that stage. Nothing else existed in that moment except for Eddie. His day old cologne still lingering on his skin, and the cigarette smoke that clung to his clothes, the way those few loose strands of hair tickled my face, the way his breath hitched just before he finally, let his lips meet mine. A deep sigh left my chest and I felt myself melt into his touch. My hands found their way up to his shoulders, sliding up until I reached the back of his neck, attempting to pull him closer to me. A small whimper escaped my mouth as I felt his tongue swipe across my bottom lip, encouraging me to open my mouth more to give him control to deepen in the kiss.
Leaning up onto my knees, I pushed myself onto his lap. Hands sliding from my face, one gripping my hip, slipping just past the fabric of my shirt, the other shifted to the back of my head, a gentle fist of my hair held tightly into it. My body moving on instinct, my hips rolling against eddies lap, his erection hard against me through the thin fabric of his sweatpants. He groaned, pulling me away from him with a soft tug of my hair, his forehead resting against mine.
Our breathing was quick, the only other sound was the early morning birds chirping in the tress around us.
"Why'd you stop?" I asked breathlessly.
Eddie laughed, finally moving his head away from mine to look at me. "Because I'm not fucking you on the end of a dock" His hands brushed away my hair away from my face, tucking it behind my ears.
"Pussy" I said with a smirk. He looked at me shocked, a wide smile spreading across his face, and I giggled, a little shy and ducked my head into his chest to hide my face. His hands coming up around my back, warm against me.
"You'll pay for that later miss sunshine"
"I look forward to it" I said leaning back to look at him. My cheeks were burning; most definitely a bright pink.
"So am I a better kisser than Robin?" he teased.
"That's not the part I'd worry about" I laughed. "We'll have to see if you can make me cum first" I said while biting my lip to stifle a laugh.
Eddie opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by Robins loud arrival.
"Ew oh my god are you guys fucking?" She said covering her eyes.
Climbing off of Eddies lap, sitting down next to him again. He readjusted himself in his pants quickly before Robin unshielded her eyes.
"No Robin, why do you always think we've fucked, or now apparently, that we were fucking?" I asked.
"Because you two have the hots for each other, and I don't know what kinky shit you're into, maybe you want me to walk in on you" she shrugged, plopping herself down next to us.
On the way back to Steves place, Robin somehow convinced us all to go to this karaoke bar later that night. I don't know how she did it considering I don't like bars, or singing in front of people but here I am standing in the bathroom while I attempt to curl my hair a little while Robin danced around me. Eddie had gone back to his place to shower and change, and then was meeting us back here, designated drives still undecided.
My outfit tonight was a pair of light blue jeans that were flared, and a red tank top, and of course my converse. I decided not to bother with anything I would get too hot in, either from the weather or the alcohol. After finishing my hair and makeup I forced Robin to sit on the counter standing in between her legs while I dabbed costume glitter onto her cheeks.
"I don't like this Ollie, it's sticky" She said leaning away from me slightly.
"But you look like a fairy!" I said taking a step back to admire my work. Robin turned around to face the mirror, tilting her head thoughtfully.
"It's pretty, but sticky" She said wrinkling her nose. "I don't like the texture"
"You don't even know what it feels like, you're not the one touching it" I said smoothing it across her cheekbones. "Just try to keep it on for a little bit, and if you hate it, I will personally make sure to wipe every single speck of glitter off of you" I said while dabbing some onto my own cheeks, deciding to add a bit to my shoulders and chest, lots of skin exposed from my top.
"You're gunna look like a disco ball" Robin laughed, hopping down off of the counter.
"Good" I said looking at her over my shoulder through the mirror.
She clapped her hands together with an excited shimmy before speaking "So, Steve is driving me, Vickie, Dustin, and Lucas. Nancy is Driving, Johnathan, Will, Mike, and El, and then I figured Eddie could drive Max, and you, cause he lives right next to her anyway"
"Is this bar gunna let them in like the other one did? None of the kids are old enough to be in there" I said laughing, shoving my belongings into my small backpack.
"Yeah, they don't really care, as long as you're not being stupid, and like sixteen" She said shrugging. "Plus they know all of us, and if Steve and Nancy are around, you can kind of get away with anything" she smirked.
"I'll keep that in mind"
Twenty minutes later, in the passenger of Eddies van, Max buckled up on the bench seat in the back, our parade of cars followed each other to the bar. We all loudly shoved our way into the small bar, our group taking up most of the space. The bar was covered in layers of string lights, all different colours, some blinking, some slowly fading in and out, it smelled like fresh wood and beer, an odd combination but somehow comforting.
The wooden bar to my right, a small stage, only maybe a step up in height at the other end, a microphone stand in front of the chunky karaoke machine.
"What's your poison?" Eddie asked coming up behind me, his hand on the small of my back.
"Jus' whatever their house beer is" I said smiling up at him. The lights reflecting off his dark eyes, making them sparkle like the glitter on my cheeks.
"Really?" He asked shocked. "I expected something more fruity and colourful from you"
I rolled my eyes and smiled "I don't drink often, but beer is one of the few things that doesn't make me fully cringe"
"A woman after my own heart" he said, placing one hand over his heart for emphasis.
"I'm damn well trying" I said leaning into him, so we were standing chest to chest, craning my neck to look up at him. His hand on my back shifted, bringing it up to hold the side of my face. "Kiss?" I asked.
"Of course" he said smiling, while leaning down to plant a soft kiss on my lips. My eyes closed briefly and I hummed in content.
"Okay lemme go get drinks" he said while placing another quick kiss to my lips. "Before you convince me to stand here and kiss you all night"
I blushed and watched him walk towards the bar to order drinks for everyone. Robin slid up next to me with a mischievous look in her eyes.
"You've got it bad don't you" She said while bumping her shoulder into mine.
"It's terrifying" I admitted. It was something I was trying to push to the back of my mind. Knowing we were here for only a few more days, the thought of leaving Hawkins and Eddie behind. Not that he was far, but would I still be worth it for him? I felt like he was putting pieces of me back together that I didn't even realize I had lost. Did he want more? Did I want more? It felt like it. Sickly sweet, shiny and gold, so many good things wrapped into one human being and the way he looked at me made me feel like he felt the same way.
But I was just some girl, from another place, another time, I wasn't part of this world, their world, Eddies world so could I except him to even consider allowing me to stay in it?
"I think he likes you just as much" Robin said softly. "We haven't seen him this happy in a long time"
I bit at the inside of my cheek, too many emotions I wasn't ready for threatening to bubble up and overflow. I took a deep breath, grounding myself in the moment, reminding myself to be present, and allow myself to feel. "Well I hope I can keep him this happy forever"
About four beers later I was a bit more drunk than I intended to be, but it felt good. I felt warm and fuzzy like the bubbles fizzing in the bottle I held in my hand and I danced around the tabled with Robin, scream singing the lyrics of whatever songs our friends were up singing. "You have to sing!" Robin yelled into my ear.
"No way! I'm not doing that"
"Come on! I know you want to, annnnddd" she sang the last word. "I saw they have Queen songs" She raised her eyebrows up and down at me.
I groaned. "You know I can't resist Queen"
She hopped up and down clapping her hands together before enveloping me into a quick hug before pushing me towards the small stage. Thankful not everyone was paying attention as I walked up, picking my song and waiting for it to count me in. Only when the first I sang the first word did Eddies eyes snap from Steve to me.
"Can anybody find me somebody to love?"
The gang started yelling and clapping, encouraging me to keep going. Closing my eyes and smiling I took a moment to remind myself to feel, and so I did.
I wasn't at all graceful in my steps, but still earned a few extra hoops and hollers from other strangers around the bar.
"Each morning I get up I die a little, can barely stand on my feet" Taking the microphone off of its stand, its wire hanging loosely between the fingers of my left hand. Trying to breathe and not topple over at the sight of Eddie staring at me. As I continued to sing, I stepped down off the little stage, standing closer to my group of friends, dramatically serenading them as I belted out the words to one of my favourite songs. Sliding down onto my knees, feeling the hard wooden floor scrape against them, swinging my hair in a circle before pushing it up and away from my face, my cheeks were flushed and my chest was rapidly rising and falling.
I felt like lightening.
"I get down on my knees and I start to pray, 'til the tears run down from my eyes Lord, somebody, ooh, somebody" I took a breath, locking eyes with Eddie for a beat too long but the alcohol in my system making me a little more brave, so I kept hold on his eyes while I sang the next line.
"Can anybody find me somebody to love?" And I swear he had to grab Steves shoulder to help keep him up.
Finishing the song with the same dramatics I shoved the mic back into it's stand and was greeted by most of the gang circling me in a group hug.
"Holy shit Ollie!" Nancy said with wide eyes. "Where did that come from?"
I giggled. "I just really love that song" I said breathlessly.
Robin was still clapping when I finally sat down next to her. "I knew you'd crush it!" She said reaching up for a high-five which I gladly returned. Leaning forward so she was closer to me, her words quiet. "I think Eddie just fell in love with you"
I blew a raspberry and laughed, snorting once before covering my mouth.
"God you really are drunk" Robin said laughing with me. "Speak of the devil" Her eyes glanced upwards behind me, and I turned to see Eddie.
"Hia" I said with a giggle still on my lips
"Going for a smoke" he said holding his hand out to me. "Wanna come?"
I nodded, grabbing his hand and following him out to the front of the bar. The minute we stepped foot out onto the sidewalk he spun me around and pulled me into him, pressing a firm kiss to the side of my head. "Why did you tell me you could sing?" He held me at arms length, examining me before reading into his pocket to pull out two cigarettes, one with writing on it and one without.
"Cause it's not something I really do in front of people" I said watching his hands while he fumbled for his lighter.
"You should" He said through the cigarette stuck to his lips. "You're fucking incredible"
Holding the cigarette with the writing on it towards me, I barely got a chance to read it before he was tapping it against my lips so I would hold it between them while he flicked the lighter between the two of us, lighting both at the same time. Taking a grateful inhale and looking at it more closely. "People write songs about girls like you" was written on it with scribbled black pen.
"You gunna start writing songs about me Munson" I teased, looking up at those big brown eyes, the amber end of the cigarette in my mouth reflecting off of them.
"Already did sweet thing" He said with a smirk, smoke blowing out of his nose.
The rest of the gang stumbled out of the bar loudly, full of laughter and chaos, all finally deciding to head home for the night. All of the designated drivers corralling their drunk friends into their cars before driving off, leaving me with Eddie and Max again.
The ride was quick and we were back at the trailer park faster than I thought we'd be. Max had slipped out of the van quickly, running across the gravel road to her trailer. "Thanks for the ride Eddie! See you guys later!"
He gave her a wave with his hand out of the window before turning to me. My knees tucked up under my chin, a lazy smile plastered on my face.
"Alright miss drunk girl, let's get you inside" he said hopping out of the van and coming over to my side, opening my door and leaning against it, one hand reached out towards me to help me out.
"I'm not that drunk" I said shifting my weight to turn so I could step down onto the ledge of the van only to be pulled back into my seat. My cheeks flushed as I looked down, realizing I had not taken my seatbelt off yet. I held up a finger to Eddie who was very clearly trying not to laugh.
"Shut it Munson" I grumbled while unclipping my seatbelt, and sliding out of his van, not taking his outstretched hand out of spite. I stumbled a little as I made my way to the steps of his trailer, swaying lightly but still able to keep myself upright. Eddies hand was warm on the small of my back as he unlocked the door and ushered me up the steps first a light pat on my ass for encouragement. I giggled, standing in the middle of his living room turning to face him, unsure of which room was his. The last time I was here I passed out on his couch, and that's all I really saw except for the tiny bathroom.
"Do you want anything to drink?" Eddie asked, his hand reaching out towards me for the second time, but this time I took it. Wrapping my hand around two of his fingers as he pulled me into his kitchen.
"Thought you said I was drunk" mumbled against his arm, looking up at him.
"I meant like water you goof, not more alcohol" He nudge me slightly with the biceipe I leaned on.
I smiled. "Oh, that makes more sense" I snorted. "Maybe I am drunk" I said looking back up at him.
"Told you so" He teased. I groaned, rolling my eyes and pulling away from him, still holding onto his hand tightly.
"Where's your room?"
"Second door on the right" He said nodding in the direction.
I hummed, pulling him along with me, reaching his room a small gasp escaped me. "You're messier than I am"
His room wasn't that messy, I was definitely worse but I wasn't ready to give him that satisfaction just yet. He let me wander around his room, quietly taking everything in, trying to memorize all the things in here that made it scream 'Eddie'. I noticed the guitar hung up on his half covered mirror, the dresser below almost completely covered with rings, deodorant, a very suspicious looking can of hairspray, a box of condoms tipped on its side, the shiny square packages spilling out.
I tugged him towards his bed, letting go of his fingers to clumsily crawl onto it, dropping my backpack to the floor in front of it. I reached my arms out towards him, doing grabby hands to encouraging him to join me.
"I'm gunna get you water first" He said while toeing off his shoes, removing the few chains from his jeans, and chucking his keys onto his bedside table.
He was quick to go grab two water bottles before I could even get both shoes off. Opening one of the bottles before passing it to me, I took a few grateful gulps before handing it back to him. Setting them both down on the table next to him before coming to sit next to me. He poked my glitter covered cheek with his index finger.
"I like this stuff, suits you"
"I like to imagine that's what my insides look like- or what I want my insides to look like"
"What, shiny, or full of glitter?"
"Both" I said with a giggle. "Oh Eds, I have a great idea" I said bouncing up onto my knees. He fell onto his back covering his face with his hands, still unable to hide the smile in his voice when he said.
"Oh god, what is it"
Leaning over to grab my bag I rummaged around until I found what I wanted. With Eddies eyes still covered I climbed on top of him, so I was straddling him. His hands quickly moving away from his face, landing on my thighs, the spot right before they met my hips. I wiggled the black eyeliner pencil in front of him.
"No, no way" he said waving his hand. "Nope"
"Oh come on! You'll look so good with it!" I argued.
"No, I don't trust your drunk hands not to stab me in the eye"
"Please!" I yelled throwing my head back a little, before looking back at him, a dramatic pout on my lips. "Please baby?" I whispered.
"Fuck" he breathed. "You can't look at me like that, with those eyes, calling me baby" He groaned. "Fine, put the stupid eyeliner on me" Fake annoyance in his voice, trying to hide his obvious smile.
"Yay!" I squirmed my way up his body, sitting on him just a little higher, basically on top of his stomach. Holding the eyeliner pencil in between my teeth, I pulled all my hair back, wrapping it with the hair tie I had on my wrist until it sat in a low pony tail at the base of my neck.
"Close your eyes" I said while leaning forward, my nose inches from his, my hand raised ready to apply the liner. "You gotta close em" I said with a frown.
"Sorry" he whispered. "You're just so pretty"
"So are you" I gave him a soft kiss on the tip of his nose before carefully starting to line his top lid. "Also thank you"
He tried to hold back his smile, not wanting to mess me up or cause me to actually accidentally poke him in the eye. I made sure to keep the line as thin as I could, keeping close to his top lashes, before moving to the other eye. His hands absentmindedly smoothed up and down my thighs, sliding in between the creases of the folded material near my hips. I tried to ignore the way it made me feel, a hot heat burning in my centre.
"Okay open" His eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the soft light of his room. "This is gunna tickle, and feel like it's in your eye, but I promise you it's not kay?"
He nodded.
I leaned a little bit closer, the thumb of my left hand tugging on the skin below his eye just enough to get to his waterline. He flinched after the first swipe, his hands tightening on my hips.
"Jesus Christ that feels weird"
"I told you!" I said laughing. "Can I keep going?"
"Yeah, just hurry up" fingers tapping rapidly.
Doing both his waterlines as quickly as I could, I added the final touches by smudging out his lower lash line slightly with my pinkie finger, wiping the excess eyeliner onto my jeans. "Open" I said again, and he did. My breath hitched as I took in the beautiful boy beneath me. His dark coffee coloured eyes, seemed to glow with the liner around his eyes.
"How's it look sweet thing?" He asked.
I bit my lip and giggled, flinging my leg off of him, grabbing his hands and pulling him towards the mirror above his dresser. Staring at him I watched him examine himself in the mirror, leaning forward slightly to get a better look. His eyes widening and softening, like he was testing what it would look like with every emotion.
"It's definitely something" He laughed.
"You look sexy" I admitted while tugging back at the hair tie, freeing my hair from it with a sigh of content.
"Yeah?" He said smiling and wrinkling his nose.
"Yeah- But you were sexy before, eyeliner doesn't make you sexy, but it helps" I giggled into my hands.
He shifted so I stood in front of him, both of us visible in the small uncovered section of his mirror. Once again shy under his gaze I looked up at his guitar.
"Pretty" I said gesturing to the instrument.
"Thank you, she's got magic powers" he said stepping closer to me. His chest pressed against my back, his chin dipping down to my ear as he quietly spoke. His breath fanned across my exposed skin and I felt goosebumps rise along my skin.
"Magic powers?" I asked, leaning my head back slightly, until my head was firmly tucked under his chin.
"Mhm, saved the whole gang with her sweet sounds" He chuckled.
"But you make her make those sweet sounds don't you?" I leaned my head to the side, looking up at him as best as I could without going crosseyed with the awkward angle. He looked down at me with a soft smile.
"Yeah, I do" he sighed.
Feeling brave, but not brave enough to maintain eye contact, so when I spoke I tilted my head back down away from him, eyes shifting over to his bed that sat against the wall. "D'think you could make sounds come out of me as sweet as hers?"
He groaned, or maybe it was half of a moan. Dropping his head into my shoulder. "That's all I've been thinking about since I kissed you" He said with a sigh. "But not tonight sweetheart"
He leaned away from me, and I almost fell back without his chest holding me up. He noticed my stumble and caught me, light hands around my waist.
"Do you not, like me?" I asked. Suddenly very embarrassed, and confused. Unintentional tears welling up in my eyes, the alcohol in my system heightening my emotions.
"No, god no- Wait yes! I mean yes, I do. God sweetheart, of course I like you" his hands came up to hold my face, concern written all over his. "You're drunk baby"
"I'm not that drunk" I tried to argue.
"You're drunk enough" He said shushing me "Listen I'd love more than anything to get those pretty sounds out of you, but not while you're drunk okay?" His thumb brushed a stray tear that had managed to escape before both hands squished my cheeks together until my lips were smooshed into a pout.
I laughed through my nose, unable to open my mouth when he was squishing it like he was.
"There's my happy girl" He cooed, releasing his hands from my cheeks, resting against my neck. "Bed time?" He asked, but it sounded more like a plea.
I nodded in agreement, letting him lead me towards his bed again. "Can you sleep with me?"
"Of course" He said kissing me on the forehead. Shuffling around his room while he found clothes for me to sleep in, I stripped myself of the nights clothes, hugging my knees to my bare chest, hiding them from Eddie.
When he turned around he froze for a second realizing I was almost fully nude apart from my underwear and mismatched socks. He placed a pair of sweat pants next to me, holding the shirt still in his hands as he gathered up the fabric around the neck of the top before leaning forward and tugging it over my head. I slipped my arms through the sleeves and only lowered my knees when the fabric was pulled down enough to cover my chest.
Pointing to the folded pants next to me he tilted his head. "Pants or no pants?"
"No pants" I said shaking my head, turning around to crawl up his bed, shoving his blanket down and tucking my feet under it, pulling it up to my chin as I snuggled into one of his pillows sighing while I stretched my legs out.
A few extra minutes of Eddie shuffling around once more turning off lights and changing into a pair of checkered pj pants he finally slipped into bed next to me. He leaned over to turn off his small bed side light when I placed a hand on his chest. He looked at me concerned. "You okay?"
"I um" I hesitated. "I'm kind of afraid of the dark"
"I'll leave this one on then yeah?" He said reassuringly.
"Thank you" I blushed. He opened his arms for me and I slid over, tucking myself into his side, intertwining my legs with his.
"I'm getting that dick tomorrow I don't care what you say" I said into the warm skin of his chest which bubbled with laughter underneath me.
"Whatever you want pretty girl, sweet dreams"
