Devotional Poem for Apollo and Hyakinthos
O Apollon, God of blessed Delos,
How faithful of a lover are thee!
You are a god of great passion,
Feeling deeply, singing loudly,
Letting all the world hear your voice as you cry out for your beloveds.
I weep with thee for the fair Hyakinthos,
Spartan Prince and lover of the sun,
Who with strong and cruel winds was struck down,
Falling into the embrace of Hades.
O Apollo, loyalest of lovers,
You cradled the prince in your arms,
Saying “Don't go” until even your heavenly voice was rendered raw and cracking.
In your grief, and with your power,
You turned his precious bones into a flower,
A fair flower that surely smells as sweet as he did
When he was in your loving arms.
And I wish thee great love in the future.
May my words of sympathy and praise fill a space in your great heart,
Which beats with the pulses of the sun's flares,
And radiates with a warmth akin to flame.
You are a great god indeed, Lord Apollon,
A generous god most worthy of praise,
So fair and talented that we cannot help but love thee.
I praise you, Apollo, and your beloved boy Hyakinthos,
And I shall praise you both, together, until the end of days.
