7 How is Hellboy related to the Devil? THE DEAL: “Where did I come from?” It’s the inevitable question that’s eventually asked by every child at one point or another. However, we tend to believe Hellboy would rather not have that question answered, considering his known relatives. But could the star of Dark Horse’s ongoing saga be the son of the Devil? All that’s known so far is that Hellboy is a major demon of Hell, repeatedly referred to as “The Beast of the Apocalypse.” He was resurrected as a baby demon by the Nazis in 1944. He later took up with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense and has been fighting off vampires, sorcerers and giant, planet-devouring worms ever since. THEIR TAKE: “Hellboy is definitely not the Devil’s son,” explains creator Mike Mignola. “He might be a devil’s son, but in the Hellboy universe there are a whole lot of devils in Hell—he’s got lots of aunts and uncles.” Whatever the case, Mignola promises that we’ll find out exactly where Hellboy comes from and when he’s directly related to soon enough. “I’m going to explore all of this in detail in the next full-length Hellboy mini-series, Hellboy in Hell,” explains Mignola. WIZARD’S TAKE: Granted, we’ve never been to Hell (a lot of places similar though), but we’re guessing you don’t receive a title like “The Beast of the Apocalypse” just by being a homely guy! Our guess is Hellboy’s pretty high up on the Hell hierarchy. Maybe he’s not Satan’s direct descendant, but he has to be the offspring of someone who’s pretty damn important.
