More AuDHD!Aaron headcanons because I originally started writing this from Aaron’s perspective and then rewrote the whole thing:

aaron gets diagnosed w adhd first but when the accommodations still don’t work he gets diagnosed w autism

its at a time when terms like ‘high-functioning’ are thrown around. though this has mostly been phased out, his mum still clings to it. he can’t even begrudge her that because she spents thousands of dollars to get him diagnosed. but sometimes that term feels like a fucking trap, esp since he doesn’t always feel high-functioning

that’s kind of why he turns to stand-up comedy in the first place. it schools him on the art of improve, letting him jump from conversation thread to conversation thread until he stumbles upon a thing to say that doesn’t sound strange/out-of-place

ofc it doesn’t always work and even now, his friends single him out as a bit odd. but they chalk that up to his personal brand of humour - aaron thinks this means not funny, but the effort is endearing, so we’ll give you a pass

somehow, he lands a job on a YouTube comedy show anyway

under the lens of parasocialism, his eccentricities become endearing quirks. his stimming becomes a source of gifts. even his missed-place jokes become an inside joke in of themselves. on paper he’s doing very well for himself.

and sometimes, he feels like no matter how much effort he puts in, he just can’t get with the program. it’s not uncommon for the cast and even their invited guests to make a comment about him being strange/saying the wrong things. it makes aaron feel abnormal. it makes him feel so fucking frustrated, because he’s trying! he knows what facial expressions to look for. he’s studied the art of social cues. but it’s still not enough!

denny, herm and kevin probably don’t clock onto the fact that he’s autistic. they know that sometimes aaron struggles w that stuff. but in their mind, that’s just aaron. 

they’ll still defend the fuck out of him if someone says shit to him though. only they can poke fun at him. and aaron doesn’t care when they do, as he knows it comes from a place of love. with them, he always feels normal, even when they’re ribbing him, ‘cause that’s what they do to each other.

zane picks up on it because his wife is autistic. he never really talks to aaron about it though because he figures aaron would tell him if he wanted to divulge his diagnosis. that doesn’t mean he ignores it - he’s always looking for ways to make aaron feel more comfortable. he just doesn’t mention that he’s doing it

when aaron complains about the sound of the markers on the dry erase boards, zane goes to the shop three different times to pick up different brands until he finds one that aaron likes.
