Man I was in Oakland at Hegenberger, you know where the gas station with Wendy's and Starbucks is at. And a guy approaches me and a few friends asking for a few dollars so he could get a meal for him and his two sons to eat, claiming he was living in a Motel 6 not too far away. We gave him some food since we didn't have cash on us and he was waiting till it would be 11PM so he could start trying to wash cars to make some cash. But it hurts to see someone struggle to feed people, espicially kids.
Albert F. Hegenberger & Lester J. Maitland
Hegenberger Expressway by the Oakland Airport is named after Alfred F. Hegenberger (1895-1983), a Major General in the United States Air Force. Maitland Drive in Alameda (also near the airport) is named after Brigadier General Lester J. Maitland (1899-1990).
Both men had impressive military careers, but their role as aviation pioneers is why our streets are named in their honor. Departing from an airstrip in Oakland on June 28, 1927 at 7:09 am, Hegenberger navigated while Maitland flew the first transpacific flight to Hawaii. It took them 25 hours and 49 minutes to fly 2,425 miles.
