I think what I find so terribly frightening about the Joker, is that he has no alter ego. He has no rhyme or reason or method of operation; he just does. He does whatever will cause the most chaos, regardless of the cost to himself, because he believes himself to be a force of chaos, and nothing else. He has nothing to live for but terror and destruction. He has no one that means anything at all to him, and he has no reason to be anyone but the Joker, and only the Joker. He finds hilarity in fear and he fears nothing. A man without hope is dangerous, but a man without fear is much worse. He has nothing to lose and nothing to be but the Joker. And that’s why he inspires so much terror. Because if people could imagine a human being under the garish makeup and scars, it would be different. The clown mask is not a mask if it’s the only face he wears. And that is why I’m freaking terrified of the Joker.
