From what I know, Doll’s soul was one of many trapped in Bloodleaf Forest that was put into a toy that one of Deva’s substitute’s found.

He doesn’t seem to remember about his life before this, so I can’t say what he was before being a Shuppet…

Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem to bother him. He seems to act like a Shuppet otherwise would, they’re normally very drawn to dark auras, which probably got him into trouble earlier in the first place. It’s like nothing had happened to him at all.
