Etc.
The simple answer is dating. They'd actually only been going out officially for 4 months when IFFY proper starts.
However they've known each other for 62 years and their friendship grew stronger and stronger over those years till they were about as close as two people could be. Emotionally/spiritually. But also as close as two people could be physically without any kissing or sexy stuff.
Basically they were silly sapphics who were down bad for each other longer than they realized it and were basically dating in all but name
