May 4, 2024 - Shy Heathwren (Hylacola cauta) Found in parts of southern Australia, these heathwrens live in woodlands with dense understories, shrublands, and heathlands. They eat insects, spiders, and seeds, foraging on or near the ground alone, in pairs, or in small flocks, sometimes with other species. Breeding from July to December, they build domed nests with side entrances from grass, bark, leaves, rootlets, twigs, feathers, fur, and plant fibers on or near the ground, hidden under vegetation, bark, or fallen branches. Females lay clutches of two to four eggs and brood the chicks alone, though both parents feed them.

Found in southeastern Australia, these birds inhabit heath and shrublands. They eat insects, as well as some spiders and seeds, foraging on the ground and in thick vegetation alone, in pairs, or sometimes in small flocks. They build domed nests with side entrances on or near the ground from grass, bark, leaves, rootlets, twigs, and other materials. Females incubate clutches of two or three eggs and both parents feed the chicks.
