The city is steeped in superstition and talk of magic. It is utterly inescapable; step outside and there are temples and statues dedicated to magic. Walk far enough away so those are out of sight and thereâs something else magic-related within view. Even seemingly mundane locations like parks have rumors about mysterious happenings that are then chalked up to magic in some way.
One of the supposedly magic temples that Varian comes upon has pools of water that are -- surprise, surprise -- also magical. People seeing things in the water sounds more like the result of some sort of hallucinogen than magic to him, but the cityâs populace seems to assume anything strange is somehow linked to magic, and this is just another to add to the never-ending list. But either way, magic water does pique his interest -- not because he actually thinks itâs magical, but just out of curiosity of its composition, which is presumably abnormal in some way if all the talk of it being magical is anything to go by. He drops down in front of one of the pools and eyes it for a moment before pulling out an empty glass vial from the pocket on his apron and dipping it into the water. He then corks it and tucks the vial away again.
Is taking temple water illegal? Itâs hard to say, really. In this kingdom, kidnapping people from elsewhere and barring them from leaving is apparently just fine, so whether taking the magic water is punishable or not is really anyoneâs guess. Varian glances up and around briefly; he hasnât been reprimanded for it, so either nobody cares or theyâd not been looking. With an acquired sample in hand (or rather in pocket), he leaves. Outside, the sky is starting to burn bright orange as the sun sets. Itâs somewhat blinding, actually -- and he trips on a loose stone, crashing to the ground with a yelp. The glass vial slides from his pocket and onto the ground and Varian pounces on it just a second too late to be unnoticed. Thereâs someone else before him whoâs doubtlessly seen it and Varianâs not so far away from the temple that it couldnât easily be linked back to that yet.
(...There were guards there. Maybe taking the magic water is illegal after all, who knows?)
Varian angles a look at the stranger, a sheepish, uncomfortable grin plastered upon his face.â Uhhh -- ha! Er, I-I was just -- um. I dropped something. â A nervous chuckle. Heâs clearly attempting to sound casual, but instead achieves something far more awkward. â But, uh, itâs nuh-- itâs nothing. Not really. â
@heartconvictâ, this isnât suspicious at all. (starter call.)
