One of the foundational heart issues in the life of every child is authority. Teaching and modeling the protective beauty of authority is one of the foundations of good parenting.

If what comes from my lips is ‘the fruit,’ that means the root is in my heart. So if I say something ungrateful or ugly, I can’t say, ‘Oops, that just slipped out. I don’t know where that came from!’ Instead, if I don’t like the fruit of my lips, I need to let the Holy Spirit do some work on the roots in my heart.

Children are our heart’s mirror. How we interact with them truly does reveal what we value most about life.

The Lord is looking on our hearts, and, so, we should be looking on them as well, keeping good watch on our affections and guarding against anything that might corrupt our hearts and compromise our faith.
