        there are a lot of 'what ifs'. what would have happened if she had stayed? if she hadn't had to run? if she hadn't been so afraid of finally getting caught? if her story wasn't so complicated? if she could have given herself the time to indulge in the happy bubble she had built in mystic falls?

        katherine knew that she'll never find out. she didn't know if it had changed a thing. perhaps, if she hadn't been so keen on making the world believe she had died just to get a few years of peace, she would have left mystic falls the moment she had found out about their secret plans. a vampire-hating community is a dangerous thing, especially for someone who valued her survival over everything else. and yet she had stayed. not only in order to gain freedom for a few years, but also for him.

        her eyes connected with stefan's and she sighed. "i never wanted you to turn under those circumstances", and that's the truth. while she had planned on turning him, she had planned it out entirely differently. "and for that i'm sorry. i wish i could have been there for you when you needed me. i wish i could have been there to catch you."

        but would stefan believe her? no. she knew she had lost his trust.

the youngest salvatore’s eyes lowered, absentmindedly playing with her fingers and, out of a centuries old habit, began to pick at her nails.  in a way he was right, about one thing.  about how memories were all the same, how at the end of the day they all had one thing in common.  that they were meant to keep something alive, whether it was a person or a place or an event, something that one would want to desperately keep with them forever.  but there were some memories that camilla would rather get rid of, would rather forget about all together.  if there was a switch for that, part of her believed she’d flip it with zero hesitation, no questions asked.  “stefan, i don’t think you get it,” she finally spoke.  “father actually adored you, there’s moments where i don’t even think he’d want me to keep his memory alive.”

in the dark of the theater, it was easy to hide the evidence, but with the lights now turned on, her emotional side was revealed to her best friend. before her somber expression was replaced with a scowl, lexa blew her nose into her tissue and discarded it, among many more, as they exited.
