In this chapter Paul teaches them about the importance of moral purity and the responsibility of believers to live a clean and Godly lives. He instructs them to live a life of brotherly love towards one another, addresses their concerns for the people who have died and points them to the promise of Christ return. He condemns those who refuse to work while they wait for the return of Christ, and he corrects they’re wrong understanding of prophetic event and what is to come.

In this chapter Paul discusses sending Timothy to help establish their faith and encourage them to stay strong in the midst of persecution and adversity. He urges and exhort them to continue and stay steadfast in the apostles doctrine. Once again Paul remembers the Thessalonians fondly and expresses his desire to see them. He commands them to stand in the Lord and then offers up another prayer. His prayer is that they would increase and abound in love; also that their heats would be holy and blameless before the Lord. And he ends his prayer with another mention of The Second Coming.

Opens with Prayer of Thanksgiving lays out the KEYS for the next 5 chapters.

In his prayer, Paul remembers their FAITH, LOVE, & HOPE and praises them for remaining steadfast in the truth. The message of chapter 1 is FAITH and Paul’s goal was to encourage the Thessalonian church. Paul commending them for keeping the faith in the midst of persecution.

As we mentioned earlier, Thessalonica was a city in Greece and was completely polytheistic; they had a god for everything. There were three main groups and cultural influences in that region; the Greeks, the Romans and the Jews. Paul’s teaching was very radical and foreign to these communities. They received a lot of persecution, especially from the Romans, because they were preaching Jesus as the one true King overall, and the son of God. (Acts 17:7) This put them at odds with the entire culture that was steeped in idolatry and believed that Caesars reign was supreme.

The church of the Thessalonians believe the apostle doctrine apostles doctrine, excepted Jesus as the Messiah and became true examples of the faith even in the midst of persecution. If began to separate themselves from the Roman culture and the evil practices of their day because of the fear of the Lord. They clung to the teachings of Paul, believing in faith, putting their hope and trust in the salvation which was to be revealed by Jesus Christ at his second coming. Timothy reported that the church was prospering and in good health; also the genuineness of their faith. They were living authentic Christian lives, spreading the Gospel in power, and their testimony had gone out throughout the entire region.

[9] For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. 1 Thessalonians 1:9 NKJV

Jump Start Book Club - Intro to 1 Thessalonians >>

This was the first letter Paul wrote and many believe that it predates the other New Testament books. Some scholars speculate that it was written as early as 49AD, but the majority of academics believe it was written around 51 A.D. Paul wrote this letter while he was in Corinth to strengthen the church of the Thessalonians in their faith and reassure them of Christ eminent return. The 2 main themes of this book are the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and the returning of the Lord. There is a reference to The Second Coming in every chapter of this book.

Thessalonica was a city in Greece and at the time there were still heavy a Roman occupation. Paul’s ministry confronted the Jews living in that area, and also challenging the Roman and Gentile communities to believe the gospel and separate themselves from a culture steeped in idolatry. The church was founded by Paul and Silas just 2 to 3 years before this letter. We know that Paul preached for about 3 weeks, because the Scripture says that he was with the Thessalonians for 3 Sabbath ‘s. (Acts 17:1-4)

The church was under severe persecution and the congregation was concerned over the members who had died. Also Paul feared that false teachers might have come in and introduced false doctrine to lead them astray. Paul sent Timothy to see the spiritual state of the church. Timothy came back with a great report; he found that the church was in good health and prospering.

The Secret Place of Intimacy
