who tattooed the face of a teenager???
I bought the FF8 remaster a while back and like, it's so pretty and the in-game models are more detailed which has the (intentional?) side effect of making all the characters look younger. And the game suddenly becomes so much more unsettling when they actually look their ages. I think it was always supposed to be unsettling that these teens are an elite mercenary force but now it really *hits* that Squall is only 17. It's wild, just remastering the graphics significantly strengthened the story.
Right? The whole theme of Child Soldiers really hits hard when you can see their actual faces. Suddenly Headmaster Cid and his "we only recruit students between 15 and 19 and require they graduate by 20" policy doesnt seem like the actions of The Good Guy. The themes of trauma and how it can affect your memory and relationships becomes so much clearer. And Rinoa's shock and dismay when the SeeD characters casually dismiss how they might die on a mission but they can't disobey orders anyway seems more impactful. Even the cute, optimistic, genki girl Selphie explicitely says she doesnt mind if she's killed at 17 because she's a professional and that's just the job! People are forever harping on Rinoa for not being "professional" about these kidnapping/assassination/invasion missions in the beginning of the game and missing that she's the mentally healthy one. Her moral compass has not been skewed by years of indoctrination and forced memory loss. We are used to our heroes being stoic about dealing death and destruction in our media, and Rinoa's attitude is supposed to be the reminder that this casual acceptance is not normal.
Squall's face has more than 5 pixels AND Headmaster Cid doesn't look like Robin Williams anymore? This remaster sucks.

Cid Kramer not being tried and charged for war crimes and child abuse and then subsequently executed for it is probably the biggest problem I have with this whole game.
