Repeatable Header Over Flashy

A good journal header is not the one that looks most impressive on a perfect afternoon. It is the one you can redraw when you are tired, behind schedule, and still trying to keep the page alive.

That is why repeatability matters before flash. Flashy lettering can become a small wall before writing. A repeatable header becomes a starting ritual.

The two-minute header test

Use a structure your hand can remember: date, tiny context mark, one steady line, and an optional micro-divider.

The tiny mark is enough personality for most daily pages. A dot, leaf, heart, weather symbol, or small star can carry the mood without asking you to design a whole title treatment from scratch.

Habit wins before decoration

There is nothing wrong with a dramatic header when the page calls for it. The problem is using dramatic lettering as the default for a page you want to keep using.

If the header needs too much effort, you start delaying the page. If the header has a simple formula, the page starts before your mood has time to argue.

Draw the header once.

Redraw it smaller.

Redraw it faster.

Keep the version that still looks clear.

I did a thing (again). Because apparently my “totally normal reviews” weren’t enough for my overachieving brain, and I started drawing book covers too. Was it smart? Nope. Will I stick with it? Probably not. But they’re cute, and I’m riding this manic wave with pride 🫶

Wow, it’s actually really flattering that people want to know how I make my banners, headers, dividers, etc. Because when I started trying to make my own stuff I thought I very much sucked at it. 😂😂

I use Canva for everything I design, and I now do make all of my stuff as I’ve learned the program over time.

I wouldn’t take someone else’s design and try to edit on top of it—unless the creator has specifically shared it for others to use. (Make sure to credit/@ them if you do use their design with their permission.)

How do I do it? Through a lot of painstaking trial and error lol.

Though someone else also asked me this recently, so here’s a short post on the basics of how I make my dividers, for example.

I use a combination of the basic line, shape, and frame tools with graphics and other elements from Canva templates that I think will go with the fic to create headers, banners, etc. Between those and the editing tools, I try to utilize all of what the program has to offer without going too crazy with the design. If something has too many elements, people don’t know where to look and it becomes “too busy.”

I try to create designs that are simple, effective, eye-catching, consistent with my style, and hopefully well-balanced.
