Headcrab: many like em, many hate em. Most common xenian food item. Bred to be pets and to have mutations and abilities. Kinda like owning a mix between a venomous snake and a puppy. Comes in just as many sizes as dogs, along w similar mutations or proportions. does NOT taste like crab
Standard: "terrier sized" creatures with two long-clawed arms and two little back legs. Round, often dark brown or tan and may be lightly patterned. Bacteria-ridden saliva will infect or even kill smaller breeds or young puppies. Standard headcrabs are easily capable of single-handedly taking down an average mutt, who will then become a host for the headcrab. A host's barks may transform into distorted chittering from the headcrab. Fast or aggressive dog breeds do best to hunt them. Capable of burrowing but will rarely dig one itself. May be lightly haired.
Fast: Slender, faster, and much more gamey when consumed, fast headcrabs adapted to take out quick and cunning breeds. Unlikely to burrow, may taunt or confuse a dog by mimicking their barking. Longer limbs make it easier for average dogs to grab them, making fast headcrabs wary species. May have agouti color patterns or distinctive white markings.
Poison: Capable of injecting a devastating, fast-acting neurotoxin. Will most often target large, working dog breeds in numbers 2-5, using the large dog as a tank-like host to take down smaller breeds. If kept in captivity, it will lose its venom. Will made odd rattling noises or hisses. Not really recommended to eat; the neurotoxin leaves a weird taste in the meat at best, and at worse the body can't digest it. May spit venom, though mostly done as a warning. Most likely to have striking, otherwise unnatural coloring.
Armored: Hard to kill even by large guardian dogs. May not go after very small breeds, though will still act territorial. Dogs will usually flip over and stab an armored headcrab rather than bite and shake like normal. Has juicy,
"sweeter" meat directly under the shell, leaving the subspecies a sort of luxury food.
Clown: Often in groups of 3-7 (though can be more), only capable of taking down terriers and incombered dogs. May have flashy patterns or distinctive white markings, communicating in "laughing-like noises". second most common subspecies to be farmed, paired with a similar taste to a standard headcrab when cooked. Spend a lot of time underground, but will come out after sensing vibrations above.
Parasite: Containing multiple breeds, parasites are only found in captivity. Either used as quick, cheap food or pets. Rarely capable of deadly bites, only a risk for immunocompromised or allergic dogs. Will often have two pairs of arm claws and smaller, weaker beaks.
Carcinarat: It's theorized these natural-born hybrids were started from a stray, aquatic-type parasite, which then infected and assimilated with wild rat colonies. Often coming in a wide range of colors, they may also have crab-like pincers and eyestalks. Will rarely hunt a normal dog, preferring to hunt similar-sized creatures, if any meat. Can't actually breathe underwater.

Here's something I have been pondering over for the past hour;
What would happen if a Headcrab latched onto a person infected with the Green Flu? Would the headcrab's biology confuse the virus making it unable to Infect or does the green fly mutate it more?
Like wise what would happen if it latched onto a special infected? Will the headcrab take on certain traits from the special host?
i think it would travel between the human and the headcrab, probably just speed up the whole zombie process, making them take less time to control the human body and use it as a weapon, but would also infect into the headcrab directly. i'm not sure what would happen from there. maybe the headcrab and the human head would start fusing together? or the headcrab just mutates on its own, and, when detached from the human head, would just go find another host but this time infect the human with the flu as well in the process. or if they're fused together, detaching it might kill it.
with the special infected, it's possible they gain the traits of the special host. bloating up like the boomer, turning into a muscly mass like the charger and tank, that stuff. though again i wonder what would happen to them if they became detached. the headcrab would probably survive, and if so, any other host they latch onto might become a special.
i think the regular green flu infected headcrabs would be way weaker on their own, which is why i would think either they'd be quick to kill if they became detached, or they just die. but special infected, they could very well live longer, especially depending on which type. Hunter and Jockey headcrabs would probably work similar to fast headcrabs. Spitters and Boomers would work similar to poisonous. Tanks and Chargers are similar to armored.
i'm not sure on the Witch though. that one would have to become an entirely new breed. Headcrabs do already make noises, and Witch is strong as fuck, so maybe it'd be similar to Gonarch? but smaller and without a sack at the bottom. i don't know if they'd be bigger? maybe the size of a great dane would be good. and maybe it would have a sack? it would probably grow the sack AND grow in size only AFTER being detached from the Witch, so once she's killed it runs away into hiding.
also why am i only finding out now Ellen voices the Witch. good lord ms McLain do you ever stop.
One of my favorite things about the half life series is the way the characters treat the aliens/creatures
LIKE its so cute to see gordon tease the snark, adrian petting the spore launcher, THE ENTIRE KLEINER AND LAMARR RELATIONSHIP
its insane how lovable valve makes these creatures even if most of them are annoying to deal with (looking at you headcrabs..(/hj i love headcrabs sm))
