I once again wanna talk about Half Life. This time I had thoughts on the Headcrabs.
big text wall so i'm spoilering it. also i talk about some HL:A stuff so if you're avoiding spoilers for it then don't read. have fun.
Man the Black Mesa Headcrabs were something else entirely. Like seriously something was up with them, and I am fully convinced that the ones we have in 2 and Alyx are not the same animals. Whatever it is that the Combine did to em truly did neuter them to a degree.
In 2 and Alyx they can be detached from the hosts and survive, they don't mutate beyond the basic zombified state, and they have some pretty crazy variants with the Fast and Poison ones. Moreover their "chest mouths" seem to not be so much of a mouth anymore, since you never see them eating things with it, it doesn't really move much, and it seems not entirely able to "bite" through hard materials (zombified Combine don't have their chest plates destroyed, and some "security guard" zombos in Alyx don't either)
Meanwhile, back in Black Mesa? We got these suckers fully attaching themselves to hosts, unable to part with it after enough time has passed. While having no variants, they can evolve/mutate into the Gonome (if you consider Op4 canon, which I do) which turned the host MASSIVE and made the crab practically fuse with the body entirely while giving it the ability to chuck pieces of flesh at prey with enough force to kill. Their "chest mouths" act more as actual maws now, capable of "chewing" and they can seemingly actually eat with it. And on top of that, it can bite hard enough to bite through different kinds of hard materials, specifically the solid Kevlar plates on the Barneys and the power vests that the HECU grunts use. The Gonome in particular actively tries to eat you with it if you're close enough. And who knows what extreme conditions there have to be in order for one of them to evolve into a Gonarch.
Also, it's crazy that one of the first contacts humans made with an alien life form was with one that turned out to be a perfect natural predator for us. And we're not even part of its natural life cycle. The Gonarch doesn't seem like it cares about pulling a Xenomorph Queen on us and having different life forms in containment ready to be used as host bodies for its babies, or even as food really. They probably just eat the Xen shrooms and drink one of the many Xen Soups that are available.
What if the "natural" crabs that came from Xen found out they could take over human bodies by accident? Maybe they just looked at us, went "Mushroom!" like a DRG dwarf and tried their best to attach themselves to our heads thinking they're mushroom caps, only to find out that they can't just hold on to our heads to eat us, instead finding themselves intrinsically connected to the host body. This connection providing newly unlocked thoughts and instincts, leading them to feed through their "chest mouths" and teaching them that humans = the most delicious mushrooms ever.
Meanwhile the "manufactured" crabs that the Combine created are far more weaponized, with a lower ability to control host bodies as shown by the more erratic and clumsy movements that the zombos in 2 and Alyx have, which could also be what leads to the host seemingly being aware of their situation and capable of vocalizing their feelings about it. My theory being that this is intentional, a terror tactic by the Combine to scare people even more of the prospect of becoming a zombie and actively seek shelter in Combine-controlled areas. Plus the inability to mutate the host body beyond a basic form. I know some crabs have mutated in Alyx, but I feel like it's due to a combination of multiple factors: Exposure to Earth and Combine materials and objects, exposure to Xen flora that itself had to adapt to Earth's environment, and a necessity to adapt to an entirely new life style that brought specific predators and dangers upon them. That said, all those limitations come with the advantage of being able to detach themselves from the host bodies to find another if need be. These ones being made specifically to be a parasite, a weapon against humanity... that kind of just got out of control a little. Such are things with biological weapons, you know? They probably didn't keep in mind that the things would bite hard enough to just consume the soldiers' cybernetically enhanced skulls.
All in all, Headcrabs, no matter the variant, no matter how goofy they may look and behave, are some of the most terrifying creatures I've ever seen in a video game. Imagine if those things existed and you knew that they could be basically Anywhere, always at the ready to pounce on you to disable you and take over your body. Actively hunting you down... because you're prey now. You're just a delicious mushroom now. And they are always hungry for mushrooms. Or watermelon. Whichever is available.
