When I hear HDYS or thinking about it I always remember Paul's words he was saying to Chris Salewicz: 'Iâll tell you what, if Iâd ever done that to him, he wouldâve just hit the roof'
a goth-punk moment of female rage at being gaslit by an entire social structure
George, who played lead guitar on How Do You Sleep?, tried to mend fences during the October 3 (1971) opening party for the finally completed ⏠500,000 (S1.200,000) studios in the basement of Apple's Savile Row offices and distanced himself from the song in the process. "It's a bit sad now that Apple is in the position all four of us planned three years ago. l just wish Paul would use the studio if he wants. It's silly not to. I can't see the four of us together again. But I'd like us at least to be friends. We all own this business and it's doing well and I'd like all four of us to enjoy it now."
Asked about How Do You Sleep?, he said, "It doesn't help at all. I'm glad it wasn't about me. I said to John as we were recording it, 'It's pretty hard on him!'â
-McCartney Legacy Vol 1 (2022)
i canât get over how insane how do you sleep is if you think about it for more than ten seconds. the grievances that john allegedly has with paul according to the lyricsâ making cheesy music and being too conservative (neither of which are really even true đ)â are like diss-track ass grievances. You Suck Haha ass lines. mean for no reason.
HOWEVER you can tell how genuinely hurt and angry john is, from the way he sings it, from the demos, from the line âhow do you sleep at night.â some of the more specific lines, like the one about Yesterday, the stuff thatâs just straight up mean, have been attributed to klein and yoko. that makes sense, both of them were johnâs yes-men at the time and if john was mad at paul, they were gonna back him up on that. but i keep coming back to the demos where john will sing âhow do you sleep, babeâ or âbrother.â both words indicate a DEEP connection and thus a deep hurt. making âââââmuzakââââââ is not a personal slight to john. neither is being attractive, having death rumors, orâŚâŚ. loving your mother???? all these things are is, in johnâs eyes, kind of lame and/or funny.
âhow do you sleep at nightâ is not the kind of thing you say to someone who you think makes corny music. itâs not the kind of thing you say to someone who you think is too square. it IS, however, the kind of thing you say to someone who you feel has betrayed you, who you feel has something to apologize for. my question is simple: what did john consider paulâs great infraction, the thing he hoped paul would lose sleep over, the thing he clearly wanted a resolution to?

to wade or not to wade...
into the HDYS v RAM discourse again.Â
One thing to consider: John and George both released songs of RAM-level âmeannessâ and plausible deniability. âCrippled Inside,â âI Found Out,â âWah-Wah,â âDark Horseâ ....I could go on.Â
Know why theyâre rarely brought up? Because they are normal breakup songs. They are not even CLOSE to being anywhere near the level of HDYS, and the comparison would be manifestly ridiculous.Â
The only reason the comparison gets trotted out specially for RAM is because some people really really want to justify HDYS. If not for HDYS, the digs on RAM would barely warrant a mention beyond âyup, normal pissy breakup songs.â
If privately Lennon and McCartney's mutual admiration never seriously wavered, the public pronouncements could be cruel and mischievous The falling out has, McCartney feels, scarred him in the public perception, and it still hurts. "The trouble is, when you become famous your legend walks ahead of you like a strange ghost and people think they know you, but they don't. Sadly, when John died he left me with his legacy, as in the song How Do You Sleep?" "What they don't know was that John was on heroin when he wrote that and was incredibly paranoid. I think I read somewhere that he later said he was probably writing about himself. I saw John being fed up with people and saying things and then afterwards loving them. That was the way he was. When Lennon was murdered in New York in 1980 by a deranged fan, his earlier, harsh sentiments became frozen in the public consciousness
