Despite Mymy being a satirical and comedic character, I do genuinely find it kind of sad how much she resents her roots. I think it’s safe to say you can indulge in the culture of another country without hating the one you came from. Like not to get serious about Mymy Schoppenboer of all characters, but at the end of the day she’s just this teenage girl who basically hates herself
And that’s not to say I don’t think she’s genuinely happy in the Netherlands just living as a Dutch person, but it IS to say that she is incredibly distraught by anyone even knowing she’s from Japan. Kinda sad just in of itself despite the comedic aspects
No I don’t think Mymy is depressed or mentally fucked or whatever, at least not as she stands now. I think she’s actually doing pretty well for herself. But I imagine that if she stayed in Japan she’d definitely be a lot like Maya (hikikomymy is my cited source here)
I like to think that as she gets older, she kinda chills out. Doesn’t really hate Japan anymore. She doesn’t love it and doesn’t actively participate in the culture because at that point, it doesn’t really feel like hers, she’s become disconnected from it. But she has a healthy relationship with being an immigrant, and I think that’s a good thought
Sorry I get so serious about Mymy cause I hate to see her get bastardized the way she does. They’re sending this 16yo off to war </3 she’s just a girl hopelessly fixated on the Netherlands

Aiden's coming out scene in the season 2 remake genuinely means so much to me and I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT.
Aiden basically makes it clear that the reason he's never been romantically involved with anyone is because of his gender identity. He's afraid of how people will think of him/how they will perceive him. Especially with him being explicitly gay, it's not unlikely that he could experience some kind of dysphoria when comparing himself to a cis man in a relationship (I know I would).
I think this is something really important to explore, even if it was just briefly in passing. It definitely delves deeper into his insecurities in a MUCH more meaningful way than in season 2 beta, despite that being more explicit with his coming out. I kinda wish that same energy had been kept for the remake while also giving Aiden that opportunity to share his insecurities with James.
While I say that, I do want to point out that this was on live television in-universe, and considering the context of what Aiden said, it makes sense that he might not want to be so explicit. If he was worried about getting into relationships because of his body or identity, it wouldn't make much sense for him to then go on live television and come out like nothing ever happened. So, in terms of character, the way he brought it up feels genuine and real.
Anyway that's all to say that relationship-based dysphoria should be touched upon more in media. This was a rare sight and I really enjoyed that little bit of info being thrown in there. I might rewrite this scene OR add onto it in a behind-the-scenes kinda way. Like Aiden talking to James off-camera so that he can stay private. But yea that's all I've got to say about that, the remake was really awesome and I still love Aiden as much as I did in beta <3
Not all canon compliant but I DON’T CARE.!!!! Just keep in mind that this is how I see the characters when I draw them :3
Some of these are a little serious but generally just normal stuff. I choose to consider Mayamails canon BTW
Everything below the cut..
Maya Schoppenboer
17 years old (born 2002)
Trans guy. This is one is kinda in the back of my head so usually when I draw Maya, she IS a girl like in the source material. I only draw him as a trans guy in my Across the Sea (Mayiko) AU and occasionally in Latinzellig depending on how I feel. He definitely had a devastating /tttt/ phase during the early stages of his self discovery. I always draw girls with lashes (I’m no better than a Disney film) so if you see Maya with lashes, assume she’s a girl. In which case you can also assume she’s a trans girl, if that pleases you :3 otherwise, he’s just pre-everything
Bisexual. Do I really need to elaborate on this one?
Other-Unspecified Persistent Mood Disorder + psychotic symptoms. Maya’s inconsistent mood and perceptions of others all throughout the Mayamails and Pilot gave me this one. She goes on and on about how jealous she is and how she thinks her sisters have it better than her, yet still doesn’t want them to hate her (like not wanting Coco to be mad that she doesn’t go to her party). She tends to just jump to the worst possible conclusion, including a lot of paranoid thinking patterns (IE assuming Coco was planning something/had a negative motive when just trying to help her). I know it may come off as a bit of a stretch, and maybe I’ll cover all her specific symptoms later, but as someone with OPMD and psychosis, just let me have this one ok?
Struggles with hyper-sexuality. This is virtually canon and I feel like I don’t need to elaborate but I will just ever so slightly. Whether it’s her escapism through adult media or her complete obsession with being wanted by someone, IMO Maya definitely struggles with hyper-sexuality. And I will very briefly say that I believe this is a mixture of her chronic loneliness + her likely unsafe adventures on the internet while trying to find someone she can connect to. Yes, I see Maya as a survivor
Not a big fan of her racial and ethnic identity. Being basically the only POC in her class apart from Cleo and Mymy, and likely being the only mixed kid, has probably brought her a little bit of confusion. Yes I’m projecting again as a mixed guy. I think that Maya finds it more difficult to fit in with others due to the fact that she doesn’t know where to fit herself in terms of labels. It mostly stems from her childhood
Autistic. She’s number one AuDHD. I truly believe she has both and is just undiagnosed with autism, likely forever unless her parents were to force her to get tested. Deep down she kinda has this feeling, but she’s already adamantly denied it so much that she doesn’t want to go back on her word now. Too embarrassing
Coco Schoppenboer
18 years old (born 2001)
Savior complex. She just wants to help everyone despite it not always being good for her. Coco pushes her own needs aside a lot for the good of others, or at the very least what she THINKS is good for others. This usually leads to her being a bit infantilizing, but not on purpose. She just wants everyone to be happy
She projects the role of her unborn younger sibling onto Mymy and Maya. Yea. I think Coco OBVIOUSLY still struggles with the loss of her biological family, and likely will forever since she’s not really being taught how to handle it. Despite not having an actual sibling like Mymy did, I think Coco often would imagine that if she still was living in South Africa with her family, she would be the best big sister ever. So she wants to do that for Mymy and Maya, despite the latter not really being interested. She kinda sees it as “making up” for what wasn’t able to happen, but could have been
Book smarts win against Street smarts. I really don’t think Coco is stupid, I think she’s naive but retains factual data and information pretty well. Most of her naivety stems from the fact that she doesn’t really understand the concept of adult media and other things of the sort
Unlabelled. I don’t think Coco would put a label on herself in terms of sexuality. It’s just not something that she really needs. She already has a good community of people and has never felt the need to label herself in order to connect with others, though I’m sure Cleo frequently asks her about it
Slight tendency for overbearing/codependent connection. Dare I say that losing your family in a brutal incident does a number on your mental health. Shocker, I know. Coco likely doesn’t want to ever lose anyone like that again, so I feel like her tendency to become hyper-connected to people that she’s close to is a bit higher than most. She just wants to know that everyone she loves is safe. This dependency kinda feeds back into the savior complex, where she feels like she has to be the one to protect them
Mymy Schoppenboer
16 years old (born 2003)
Trans girl. When she ran away from her home in Japan, she took that opportunity to start her new life with a whole new identity. Only her immediate family (parents + Coco and Maya) know she’s trans. She’s very secretive about it and has a little internalized transphobia issues, but eventually comes around to accepting herself (around the same time she grows out of her weird Dutch nationalist phase. Still very prideful tho)
Lesbian. YES I know she likes Captain Koek, this means nothing to me. Her one true love is Kiki, Koek is her weird selfship that Kiki just has to deal with because she has no room to judge. Notice how they both start with the letter K and are piratesque?
On the ace-aro spectrum. DEFINITELY asexual in my humble opinion (shoutout Bexotto for that idea) and far on the aromantic spectrum. Mymy hardly feels any romantic attraction except for in very special occasions. She's only had like, one crush basically in her entire life. "But don't you ship Myki?" Yes, and they got together after engaging in what was basically a QPR-situationship thing and Mymy very slowly started to develop slight feelings for Kiki, despite the pirate already having crushed on her for a while by that time. Mymy, of course, has no clue what an acearo is because she has bigger issues than whether she likes romance or not, such as annexing Flanders. She is unlabelled in this way, but it's still something she experiences.
Autistic. Dutch special interest. That’s really the meat of it. The autism spotlight usually gets shone on Maya, but I think it’s fair to assume Mymy has some pretty autistic tendencies of her own. IE: everything she does ever
Projecting the role of Eiko onto Coco and Maya. In the same vein as Coco with her sisters, I think Mymy really wants that same sisterly connection with her new family. She’s able to see more of Eiko in Coco, especially with the way they roughhouse. She clearly tries to reach out to Maya too, in her own weird way, but it’s not reciprocated very well (VOC scene). She puts on a very tough and careless persona, but I think she’s ever so slightly hurt by the notion that Maya doesn’t see her as her real sister
OK THATS ALL. For now. I might expand on some of these ideas more later but for now this is it.
