Portland Rose Festival Zone Plate Fireworks by victorvonsalza Went down to South Hawthorne Waterfront Park to photograph Rose Festival Fireworks with the Lensbaby Obscura. When I set up the camera the fireworks barge was centered in between the towers of the Hawthorne Bridge but by the time fireworks started the barge had slipped downriver lining up the fireworks closer to or sometimes even behind the west tower of the bridge; and thanks to high river levels I had nowhere to move to compensate. Also uncharacteristically there was a second barge between the Riverfront Marina and OMSI which launched fireworks in unison! But from where I was setup the second barge was behind a large tree. The strength of the Zone Plate diffraction pattern depends on how bright and point like the light source is. When the light source is bright and point like the zone plate gives a stronger and more contrasty pattern (like in photo above), but if the light source is dim to moderately bright and or soft and diffuse the zone plate gives something between a soft pattern and no pattern at all. So every form of fireworks had a different balance of diffraction patterns from strong ones like above to just a soft glow or some combination of both. Will post some more examples in the days ahead. And in post processing tinkering with shadows, highlights, contrast, texture, and clarity gives you a lot of variety of looks. Another interesting aspect of the Lensbaby Obscura zone plate is how the shape and colors of the centers of the diffraction patterns around each light source change from circular near the center of the photograph (note in photo above bottom half was as cropped away) to spectral ellipses near the edges of the photograph. The Zone Plate is f22 and Live Composite mode in the OM-D E-M1 MarkIII only goes upto ISO 1600 so exposures were in the 1-2 sec range which although fine for the brighter parts of the image left everything else in the mid to deep shadow areas which were filled with noise; fortunately TopazDeNoise does a nice job of eliminating or softening the harshest parts of the noise.
