“Don’t look at me like that...”
You reached up your hand, weakly caressing his cheek as Hawks held you close to his chest which you could feel was heaving softly against you as he tried his best not to sob. It broke your heart to see him so upset as the normally energetic and happy blonde already had tears streaming down his cheeks. You did your best to wipe them idly with your thumb, but you could already feel your arm getting heavy.
“But you promised…”
“I know, I’m sorry.”
You hadn’t meant to break the promise that you guys had made. The villain had come out of nowhere and you weren’t prepared for the fight. You were down before Hawks could get to you and now you were going to break the only promise that you ever made to him. You were going to be leaving him.
You gave him a bittersweet smile, trying your best to keep your composure for him but you were secretly scared as well. You didn’t even feel the pain anymore which is probably what scared you the most. It hurt a lot at first, but you didn’t feel much of anything now except the warmth of Hawk’s body against you. He was always warm, but he felt extremely so compared to you right now and it was strangely comforting to have that warmth by your side right now.
It made you feel less lonely. Even though you knew that you were going to be alone ultimately with where you were going anyways. It wasn’t like you could bring Hawks with you. No matter how much you didn’t want to go alone.
“You look so sad, stop that. You’re gonna make me cry, stupid.”
You tried to lighten the mood, but it was getting harder to speak. You just didn’t want him to look so sad anymore. You wanted to wipe away all his pain and see that extremely charismatic smile one last time before you had to go. The thought made your heart ache and even though you were trying extremely hard not to, you were pretty sure you were going to cry too.
He hiccupped softly, looking at where the blood was seeping from your stomach and onto his hands. “I-I can’t help it…” He tried applying pressure, but the blood just kept coming out no matter how hard he tried to stop it. You could already feel your skin start to turn cold, but you weren’t ready to leave. You felt tears brimming your eyes as you struggled to keep your vision in focus.
“I’m scared...”
Your voice cracked as you admitted the anxiety that was slowly rising in your chest. The edges of your vision was slowly fading out to black and it was getting harder to make out Hawk’s features. It was almost as if you could feel yourself slowly slipping out of your own body and no matter how hard you tried, there was nothing you could do to keep yourself glued in.
“I know, baby bird, but you’re gonna be okay.”
Hawks felt his heart wrench, feeling like he might puke as he watched the life slowly drain from your eyes. “Hey- No…stay with me.” He pushed his forehead against yours, his tears dripping onto your face as he panicked when he realized just how much blood you had lost. An ambulance was on the way, but he was starting to realize that there was no way it was going to make it in time.
“Baby…?”
His voice was hushed as you went limp in his hold. He pulled his face away from yours so he could look at you properly. Your eyes were open, but they were hazed over with the signs of death. Hawks felt his heart shatter as he was now the only thing keeping you propped up.
“Please…I won’t tease you anymore…I’ll be so much better, please!”
He panicked, gently trying to shake you back awake. His feathers rustled anxiously as he bargained with anyone who would listen to him. Be it a god or a devil, he didn’t care as long as they would bring you back to him. “Come on, that’s not fair! You can’t leave me…” His voice was unsteady as his hand trembled while caressing your cheek. He could already feel your warmth fading as your skin was getting cold to the touch.
“No…no, please!”
He let out loud sobs as everything else around him became white noise. Even the sound of the ambulance that was getting there moments too late didn’t register to him as he buried his face in your lifeless chest. Loud sobs that he didn’t recognize as his own left his mouth and strained against his throat, making it hard for him to even breathe. He hugged you as close to his chest as physically possible, as if he could keep you from leaving him if he held onto you tight enough.
His wings fully expanded as he screamed and cried loudly, his entire body shaking as all he could feel was pain erupting in his soul. He was supposed to be the one to protect and care for you and yet he failed. If only he had gotten to you moments sooner. If only it was him who had died and not you.
He whimpered softly, pulling away to look down at your face one last time. He gently used his hand to close your eyes for you, offering an extremely weak smile as he looked down at the one that he had loved all of his life.
“Come on, baby bird…You should know better than to go where my wings can’t take me”
