Dodie-Dorothy-Miranda Clark paves the path of sustaining individuality in the changing platform of modern music. As a 21 year old musician and Youtube personality, she offers a lot more of her life to the public’s eye than would usually be seen. Clark has been on the platform since February of 2011, gaining 900,000 subscribers over the past 6 years. Her videos showcase include covers, original songs and the occasion personal rant here and there. Dodie Clark is a person that has built herself around the community within Youtube, finding friends and collaborating. The small space of the internet that she occupies is used with the hope of helping and empowering people.

Clark shares her personal experiences in hopes of providing a light for people that may be struggling on their own. No one has ever asked her to open up and make known her life. Yet, Clark chooses to use what she has gone through as something to learn from. Her experiences with domestic violence although impacted her greatly, was an experience that strengthened her will to education the public on its existence. “This [her abusive relationship] went on for two years, making Clark’s life one of dwindling friendships… Clark was determined to do justice to the 17-year-old Dodie who was never told it was OK to not have sex” (‘The Daily Dot’, Lanning) Clark shares with the internet her struggles with anxiety and depression as well, in hopes of the help that others will find from watching her videos. Dodie Clark empowers the lives of many through a collection of meaningful original songs. With color rhymes and melodic loops, she pours much of what she has seen into the stories written in her music. “I’d never tell. No I’d never say a word. And oh it aches. Arrangement Notes: The primary elements would be the vocals. They composition of this cover is very much dependent on that. The secondary elements would be the drum beats. They are travel with the main vocals throughout the song as other instruments and effects fade in and out. The back ground elements would be the piano, as well as the echoing sounds used to alter the voice slightly. There is also a minor use of back up vocals. There seems to be an added static/’draining’ background sound with the vocals.

Lyrical Notes: There is a vivid representation of repetition within this song. The simple lines of ‘I will not kiss you’ are repeated throughout the entire song. The meaning of those words lie very deeply within the song and message. Although the title does not directly appear in the song, everything is about the thought and experience of cancer. It is a very simple, but powerful lyrical piece. A lot of the lyrics are straight forward, in a sense; which is definitely the aspect that I appreciate most in the song. 

Opinions/Message: This song is a message about cancer. The thoughts of a person in that situation, their experiences and everything that makes them while dealing with an illness. I think it talks about goodbye and acceptance in ‘this is the future’. It is a song that makes me extremely pensive. It stirs thoughts of, ‘what if’s as well as just finding courage in oneself to deal with problems that life likes to throw.
