Hawkman #29 - "The End" (2020)
written by Robert Venditti art by Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, & Jeromy Cox
“bats aren’t birds!” is this dark nights foreshadowing??? lmao
[image: 2 comic panels from hawkman 2002 #12 showing rajak darkraven (currently fused to his bird, making him a giant man-sized bird creature) trying to beat up hawkman (carter hall) in front of a salt statue of helene astar (reincarnation of hath set). rajak says “helene never asked to be hath-set. she never had a choice in the matter. she only wished to be loved! loved by me! her soul is destined to kill you and hawkgirl again!” end image]
feel like this narrative could be more interestingly explored: first of all, rajak doesn’t have the whole story, he only has whatever helene/hath-set told him. and whatever hath-set told him obviously framed it in like a way where the source of the problems was hawkman and hawkgirl
i know from the original mod of this blog telling me about infinity inc that (according to memory) hath-set tries to retroactively justify themselves with the prophecy thing (I was killing chayara and khufu because their baby was going to be evil). I think there could be like some interesting tragedy explored not in a ‘oh so the person who decided to commit murder is the good guy actually #i am very smart) but in a character having been stuck making bad decisions for so long that they can’t even really remember wehat caused them to make those decisions in the first place and trying to re-create a narrative where all those bad decisions are secretly vindicated... kind of like stuck in a cycle of tragedy which may (?) have been what the authors of hawkman were going for before the writers changed. we’ll see
