A Song That Makes Me Cry or Ramblings About Ógleði
I felt in love with the very first time I watched a concert recording of it a few months ago. The music was hitting some spot inside of my soul, it made me so sad. I had a lump in my throat. Feelings intensified when I found out what are the lyrics. The lyrics mean so much to me on a personal level, as sometimes I struggle with similar thoughts.
Ógleði shows how sorrow can be beautiful. It's so sad, but there's a beauty in it, a unique beauty that makes me want to curl on my bed and cry. An ultimate sorrow, a sorrow that every one of us feels at one point or another, no matter the reason. That's just how life works, sadness is an unavoidable part of it and Ógleði shows it can be beautiful even though heart-breaking. And since sorrow is unavoidable, don't try to flee from it. Accept it and move on. Don't try to completely get rid of it, accept it as a part of yourself.
Yup, so that's my interpretation. The lyrics are so moving, I wonder who wrote them. Also Matthías' part. No idea how to describe it, those lyrics are just so good.
Now, about the music itself. I love the motive that starts at around 2:56. I have no idea how to call it or what instrument it is, so if anybody knows I would be grateful. Anyway, it's so beautiful! It totally plugs at my heartstrings. Before that moment music is mostly sad, but this melody is kind of different, first few notes are full of hope and then it drops, it's as if you looked at somebody with hope but that hope left you after a short while and you hunch your shoulders and lower your eyes. You know which melody I'm talking about, right? And then it's 3:29 and you hear only this melody. Beautiful.
I love the violin, it really suits the song. Great addition, Hatari, I'm proud of you.
I also love how there are growing dark tones that start once throughout the song but quickly fade down, and they come back a while before Matthías starts singing. It's like those tones presage that part. Gives me the chills.
Forgive me lack of professional words, I use words such as tones, motives etc but I don't know shit about theoretic part of music so I'm most likely wrong.
Thank you for putting up with my ramblings.
