â Itâs exactly like weâre walking into a haunted house, worse even. Because ghosts canât typically yell at you or kill you. Iâd prefer a haunted house. âÂ
Sheâs more than used to the feeling of dread of dinner with her family, but the worry of whether theyâll at least be civil to Jake for one night always adds to her anxiety of the whole situation.

The arena is big, terrifying, and no matter how well trained she is for this she canât help jumping at little sounds and wishing her aim was better in the case of arrows or blades. Why on earth did she have to decide to use her chemistry skills here? Wandering around for the right ingredients is far from the ideal use of her time, after all, and even if she finds what she needs, she has to wonder if itâs a trap.
The same stands for the food, her instincts â her intelligence â assure her that itâs entirely fine, but her knowledge of the tricks they pull says differently. So sure, she knows logically what wonât poison her, but what about the entertainment values? Surely they wouldnât actively try to off a district one favorite, right? Hell, is she even a favorite to begin with, she doesnât know. At least if she dies she wonât have to face her parentsâ scolding disappointment.
Chemistry, of course, leaves her hiding under trees and hoping to manage to mix a poison or some kind of ointment before someone finds her and she has to actually defend herself with just the pocket knife from her backpack. The girl really needs a plan b. However, itâs perhaps a bit too late for a plan b when one starts hearing the crunching of leaves nearby, and thereâs no real time to try to scramble up the tree sheâs leaning against.

Quite nice of the boy not to flee in terror. That does tend to get old quickly. As a matter of fact, he seemed quite composed, though that might be from the shock.
He even offered to cook the beast something to eat back at the diner - on the house. Wonderfully kind. There wasnât much wealth left from its hoarding and pillaging days.
âYou know, I have to thank you. Us beasts donât always go right for the fresh kill. Itâs such a terrible stereotype. We appreciate a nice hot meal once and a while.â

â You have coffee here, right? â
Ellington isnât sure why exactly sheâs chosen to go to Hungryâs this morning to get coffee, rather than her usual stop of Black Cat Coffee. Perhaps itâs a need for human interaction, since all she ever does these days is hide out and sneak around, only ever really associating with Lemony Snicket, of all people.
Or maybe itâs just because sheâs tired and isnât properly thinking things through, hasnât slept in days and is currently practically falling asleep on the counter of a diner. Maybe she needs sleep rather than more coffee, but that isnât something thatâs going to happen, is it?

â Thatâs an exaggeration and you know it. â She canât help a smile as she extends her hand to him.Â
As usual, Cleo can always count on Jake to worry about her enough for the both of them. She knows well enough that the smart thing to do in the situation is see a doctor, but trusting the doctors in town isnât exactly an easy thing.
â Guess itâs a bad time to try to convince you that Iâm not as fragile as you always worry I am? â
