2016 Cosplay in Review...

I realize I’m a bit late to this game but since I was reorganazing my cosplay boxes before coming back to Tennessee the other day, I realized just how awesome of a year in cosplay I had. As always I had my “big project” for the year, which in this case was Warden Bethany Hawke from DA2, which was my first armor and major prop project. I am so proud of how all of my effort (and I mean HOURS just cutting those scales alone) ultimately came out. But I also had a lot of smaller cosplays that I absolutely loved to pieces. I discovered a lot of new media this year, like Miraculous Ladybug and Mystic Messenger, that I knew I wanted to cosplay from (so I made it happen). In addition to AnimeNext (sadly my last for the foreseeable future) and my Otakon tradition, I went to my first convention in Tennessee in December, Yamacon. While I may not produce a lot of cosplays each year, I’ve found a lot of new staple cosplays this year that I look forward to bringing back in 2017!

...and Plans for 2017!

Since I’m going to be down here in Tennessee for the next several years, one of my personal goals is going to be discovering who I am as a cosplayer outside the context of my lovely NJ-based troupe @hashtagprofessionals​.  I’m looking forward to exploring the local cosplay scene down here in the Southeast and hopefully I’ll be able to go to DragonCon this coming September! In terms of cosplays, graduate school is eating up a lot more time than I initially expected so I will be likely cutting back a bit on newer cosplays. HOWEVER, I’ll be damned if I don’t have goals. Right now my priority is going to be getting Viktor’s “Stay Close to Me” skating outfit from Yuri on Ice done for Otakon, and my more ambitious project is Alistair’s splintmail armor from DAO. Not only will these characters challenge my skills as a craftswoman (ie ombre fabric dying, CRYSTALS, and foam armor), but both also have personalities that are very different from my own. Traditionally I’m typecast as the quieter, motherly, gentle characters (ie the Dolorosa, Bethany Hawke, etc) mostly because that is how I am in real life, which is all fine and dandy since I tend to identify with these characters. However, with characters like Viktor and Alistair I see traits in them that I want to foster in myself (and lets be real I love those two to pieces). Both of these characters are going to be a healthy challenge for me from the roleplaying front, and I am very excited to try and do them justice.
