it must work on a delay though because i can’t see anything i’ve opened today to check other frequent re-reads. i’d love a feature where you could sort by most viewed. i’m so interested in stats. but it’s just highlighting how bad i am at commenting when i re-read though *slaps wrist*

@harrybasquiat hannah yeah the canon worship is what gets me. that’s one of the big things I try to tackle with my students – like, we’ll read these canonical authors, sure, but only ever in their appropriate and limited contexts, and always with a critical eye towards the way their legacies have formed and (in my opinion) distorted the methodologies and standards of literary study itself. all I want my students to be able to do (I mean, beyond learning to express themselves with clarity and grace) is to be able to look at a cultural formation like the canon and be like “huh… it’s so weird that women and people of color and non-Westerners and queer people etc have just never made art/literature. it’s SO weird, in fact, that there’s probably something else going on here" and then ask some questions and do some exploring and figure out for themselves just how troubling up it is that we base our cultural standards off such a tiny, tiny pool of texts and experiences. anyway like many of the people in my program I think a lot about what I’ll do differently if/when I ever become an actual professor and get to design big survey intro lit courses. I already channel RBG’s “when will there be enough women on the Supreme Court? oh, when there are nine of us” attitude in my own courses, because honestly life is too short to pretend like I give a fuck about the literary canon

ooh, i’m listening to ‘the blower’s daughter’ right now, and i can totally hear what you mean! the extra vocals are there almost in a supporting role, sort of like a whole choir might ordinarily in another genre but super minimal and stripped-down to suit that acoustic sound he’s got. niall’s obviously so good at harmonizing with other people and i’d lOVE for him to get a chance to have some female vocals to work off of, because he definitely has the versatility to sing in a slightly lower register when he needs to! i’m SO interested to hear the string bits in ‘flicker,’ too, and i’m betting some piano and other instruments throughout the album. it’s gonna be SO good
