//Spoilers for "The Long Promise"
Musing on Solomon "Wifeguy" Akurra and the broader idea of Space Marines' ways of emotional expression. Want to impress one? Blow up a tank, they'll start barking like a dog.
Sometimes I remember Mike Brooks' "The Long Promise" and I go absolutely batshit.
Solomon may have as well proposed to Tulava when he grabbed <redacted spoiler for "Harrowmaster"> and went to that Deathwatch outpost BY HIMSELF to <redacted spoiler for "The Long Promise">. That was absolutely saying "I love you" in Space Marine, and DOUBLY SO FOR AN OTHERWISE QUITE PRAGMATIC AND CALCULATING ALPHA LEGIONNAIRE WHO BY HIS OWN ADMISSION PUTS THE GOOD OF THE LEGION AND THE WARBAND ABOVE HIS PERSONAL GOALS. You could have just rigged that station to explode and shut down all emergency escape systems so the otherwise kind of unimportant target wouldn't get away, but no, YOU HAD TO GO AND DO IT ALL IN PERSON, AND IT WAS ALL FOR *ONE MORTAL WOMAN*. You've made far greater personal sacrifices to fuck over the Inquisition and get <redacted>, but then you make one little promise to old auntie Tul over there and suddenly you're putting your own life and an absolutely priceless artifact on the line for it.
Peak wifeguy behavior, I love this absolute madman.
//Spoilers for "Renegades: Harrowmaster".
Qope's silence here absolutely seals it. He's trying to keep it professional for the sake of the warband, but he's so enraged at Solomon on a personal level it can still boil over in the right circumstances, it makes him openly challenge Sol's capacity for leadership, and the setup for this clash...
Like, there's a broader pattern of Qope being more disrespectful to Tul than Kyrin or Va'kai are (not enough to have it aggressively stand out, but... Kyrin is slightly aggravated by her attitude and reminds her he's "not Solomon", but doesn't insult her, Va'kai consistently calls her "lady-sorceress" and is only visibly irked when she tries to intrude on his competences and principles as a ship captain, even Jate has the excuse of acting in the heat of combat [and still gets mysteriously headshotted while trying to use Tulava's powers to push forward with a doomed assault], meanwhile Qope consistently calls her a witch even though it's clear she dislikes being called that), and the scuffle here begins with Tulava making a snippy remark towards him and Solomon nearly coming to physical blows with Qope after he snaps back at her (and the narration invokes the potential influence of Khorne - god of bloodlust, rage and destruction who also has associations with denied or misplaced righteous anger) - his hurt clearly loops back to Tulava.
Is it because she was allowed to stay on Sol's side while he has to deal with a gaping wound in his own heart?
And it's been... what, almost ten years? A blink of an eye to an Astartes, true, but still a long time to process grief over a loss, especially for an Alpha Legionnaire, and a commander of infiltrator-sniper squad.
Maybe it's just me but it just screams "if you cared so much for Kyrin and still did what you did, then no words can explain my own pain to you, I'll try to keep things professional, but you can go fuck yourself, Akurra, you got my own love killed".
If I don't see whatever can pass for a happy-ish ending in 40K for these two in the hypothetical next Harrowmaster novel, I will riot.
TULAVA DYNE FANART DETECTED
DOPAMINE RELEASED
PLEASE READ "RENEGADES: HARROWMASTER" SO I HAVE MORE PEOPLE TO VIBRATE OVER TULAVA WITH, SHE'S SO FUCKING GOOD
