"Admittedly, we were all caught up in the same drama that was so powerful, so all-embracing that I was unaware of anything that wasn't related to it, but I had come to think that I was different. And now, racked with sobs, I was forced to acknowledge too late, much too late, that I too had loved, that I was capable of suffering and that I was human after all."
—Jacqueline Harpman, I Who Have Never Known Men (1995)
“As long as the sheets of paper covered in my handwriting lie on this table, I can become a reality in someone’s mind. Then everything will be obliterated, the suns will burn out and I will disappear like the universe.”
—Jacqueline Harpman, I Who Have Never Known Men (1995)

From the Architects:
On a densely tree-covered website in the Austin, Texas exurb of West Lake Hills, Specht Harpman was tasked with the renovation and expansion of a modest 1970′s residence. Considerably of the unique internal construction was maintained, but the alterations sought to erase all visible traces of the original residence.
The major aim of the new renovation and growth was to preserve all of the site’s huge twisting Dwell Oak trees while producing a new and open home that embraces the landscape and weaves itself around the current trees.
The main mass of the home was lifted off the ground plane by generating a series of masonry walls that lengthen across the website to form interior and exterior rooms that frame views with the Reside Oak trees beyond. The walls define loved ones spaces on the reduce level, even though supporting a “floating box” of bedroom and personal spaces over.
Ceilings of the existing residence had been low. For the expansion spaces, the ceiling plane was maintained, but the floor was lowered to stick to the contours of the site, producing a terraced interior landscape that offers height to rooms even though maintaining a modest exterior expression.
