Interesting facts about Golden Temple
Harmandir, also spelled Harimandir, is the most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs and the main gurdwara, or house of worship, in Sikhism. Darbar Sahib, or the Golden Temple, is another name for it. It is located in the northwestern Indian city of Amritsar, in the Punjab province.
Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, constructed the first Harmandir Sahib in 1604 and symbolically placed it on a lower level to enable even the most humble to enter it. He also had exits on all four sides, implying that it was accessible to people of all castes and creeds. The foundation stone was laid by Mian Mir, a Muslim saint from Lahore. The temple was destroyed several times by Afghan invaders before being rebuilt in marble and copper overlaid with gold foil during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1801–39). As a result, the structure became known as the Golden Temple.
