Pink and Fuzzy Hardhack
Spiraea douglasii (Hardhack, Douglas’ spiraea) and Apis mellifera (European honeybee)
Hardhack is another plant that the Scottish botanist David Douglas discovered as he explored the Pacific Northwest in the 1820′s. It often forms dense thickets which are hard to hack a trail through, thus it’s common name.
It was fashionable to have “American gardens” in Europe at the time and it was an instant hit. Apparently, it enjoyed the European climate because it is now found growing in the wild in France, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and Poland, and is considered particularly invasive in Denmark and Latvia. Ironically, here is hardhack growing in it’s home and native land, and it’s being pollinated by a European Honeybee.
